  • Berry Tramel: Will OU look foolish or stately?

It appears that both Larry Scott and David Boren overplayed their hand. The Pac-12 pulled the rug out from under the Sooners and Cowboys, some eight hours after my story that OU had set parameters for remaining in the conference. So for now, it’s back to the Big 12 for the Sooners. At least for now.

Scott, the Pac-12 commissioner, gave OU assurances that it would be invited to the Pac-12, with or without Texas. Boren, the OU president, ran with that information. But it appears that the Pac-12 invite for just OU and OSU was not so solid — either because of fatigue at the process or because the Pac presidents didn’t want to add just those two — and that Scott had to inform the Sooners that his welcome mat was a little premature. Leaving Boren to try to save face.

    • I predict we are welcomed with open arms.

One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.

You don't even believe that I liked your analysis from yesterday?

And when did you resign from the thread?

        • What I don't get, is why, when literally less than 12 hours ago I was huddled in a corner scared to see BYU move into irrelevance because of superconferences and life on the outside... are we back to "BYU is playing hard ball"?

Did anybody see McKay Jacobsons interview on KSL in prep for UCF last night? It went something like this "we still have personal goals... but we're not in a conference so... well... we're not in a conference". The kid looked shell-shocked, and now Bronco could do his greatest Captain Moroni/Title of Liberty impression possible, and still have a hard time getting his kids a reason to keep their heads up.

I really hope the administrators realize that we're about 10 National Titles, 6 Heisman winners, 83 All-Americans, and a Gipper short of being Notre Dame.

Here is what I fear. There are actually some people who believe BYU is God's football team and God is eventually going to cause his team to be more popular than the pretender.

You think I am kidding. I actually think that mindset exists and worry it might exist in some decision makers minds.

People keep saying that, but did anyone ever state what it actually means?

We might actually be more like Notre Dame than we want to be. That is that we're similar to the Notre Dame of the present.
Does anyone else wonder if the reason Notre Dame has struggled in recent years is due to a lack of motivation after a loss or two? Sure they have a better second half schedule than BYU, but that just means they're playing better competition without any kind of back-end incentive.

Notre Dame struggles because it truly holds recruits to the same academic standards as regular students, and because of its archaic policy on redshirting. Even after a loss or two, Notre Dame still has a BCS berth to play for, and a bar that's not that all unclearable in any year.

                  • I'm putting the cart before the horse, assuming the Big 12 needs/wants to add 3 teams to get to 12, who do you add besides BYU?

West Virginia and Louisville? They seem to be the obvious answers.

West Virginia, Pitt and BYU all together would have been nice. But Larry Scott apparently goaded OU to make a premature announcement which caused Pitt to scurry over to the ACC.

I know someone else in the thread compared USF to SDSU, but I can't help but wonder if grabbing that program wouldn't be a bad move. It has a huge enrollment, but it's a fairly young school with cruddy academics. Instead of Louisville, the Big 12 adds USF. I know USF garners far less attention than UF, FSU and Miami, but Florida is still the second best recruiting grounds in the country.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                    • It looks like WVU is taking the appropriate steps to become conference mates with BYU.

                        • I'm not so sure how much leverage the Big-12 has now with adding teams. Apparently the existing members of the Big East have pledged to stay together. If we take them at their word that leaves BYU and some MWC or C-USA teams to choose from.

BYU, Boise and SMU/Houston/UCF. West Virginia may be holding out for an SEC invite. I think the Big 12 could peel off USF at least.
