Have I learned that speculative posts on some random sports message board have any kind of discernible effect on conference realignment?
No I haven't learned that lesson.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
People keep saying that, but did anyone ever state what it actually means?
Not really. I think the better term is miscalculation, or perhaps things just got away from them. But, to be claer, my only source of info is this board.
Here is what I fear. There are actually some people who believe BYU is God's football team and God is eventually going to cause his team to be more popular than the pretender.
You think I am kidding. I actually think that mindset exists and worry it might exist in some decision makers minds.
Sorry, but in a way I do believe that BYU is God's football team. It's just that I also believe that Zion's Camp was God's ill-planned, undermanned, inefficient little expedition. Being faithful is good, being faithful and competent is better.
Nonetheless, I still meet LDS who are convinced despite scripture, history, and experience, that if you just trust in the lord, you can make crazy decisions and stuff works out.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

A couple of new tidbits I have learned in the past few pages of posts...
The LHN is a home run despite almost no viewers, carriers or subscribers. It also managed to land the Kansas football game.
West Virginia has a name for its student section. They are called the Maniacs. I no longer want West Virginia in the B12.
Even if they have a poster named MowtaneerManiac?

I really hope the administrators realize that we're about 10 National Titles, 6 Heisman winners, 83 All-Americans, and a Gipper short of being Notre Dame.
You haven't got Rudy either.
Rudy...Rudy...Rudy
"We should remember that one man is much the same as another, and that he is best who is trained in the severest school." -Thucydides
"Study strategy over the years and achieve the spirit of the warrior. Today is victory over yourself of yesterday; tomorrow is your victory over lesser men."
What are you talking about Bronco loves to play Rudys all over the place. He just doesn't put them in during the last couple plays of the last game of their careers, instead he starts them for two or three years.
It looks like WVU is taking the appropriate steps to become conference mates with BYU.
Is this another one of those Abercrombie & Fitch t-shirts?
"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU. "Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek. GIVE 'EM HELL, BRIGHAM!

In all fairness to Zions Camp, it did end up being the proving ground for the strongest part of church leadership, along with some pretty awesome stories... but I get your point. Hanging off a cliff and holding onto a branch, you don't let go because your living right... I'm pretty sure God would think if your living right, you would have a brain too.
But I have a lot of the same fears as BYU71. In my mind it should be football, with kids living a crazy code of honor, that happens to work as a missionary tool... not "The Missionary tool #4: Football". And a chance at all that extra money the BIG 12 could provide should surely make BYU easier to run, especially now as the church is cutting it's schools all over the world... IMHO.
Maybe BYU will, but it would be smart for the rest of the B12 to vote them out. They bring nothing to the table, they have no fans, little history, and they are threatening to sue everybody. That's not someone you want to do business with going forward.
I haven't seen this posted here, but it is very interesting. Breaks down how many real fans each football program has. http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/201...ignment-chaos/
BYU is on par with OK St and Kansas, but miles ahead of Iowa ST, Kansas St, and especially Baylor, who has only 200k fans--a lot less than any other crappy BCS team.
Even more interesting is that B12 programs have a lot more fans--who watch TV--than P12 programs. Based on this Metric, Utah is a real drag on fans/school in the P12. And BYU, who has twice as many fans as Utah, would be tied for 3rd in the P12 with Cal. P12 would be smart to book Wash St, who is still better than Baylor.
Jacob, I like your post and all, but lol sourcing the New York Times on that number of fans issue. We've already settled the debate here on CUF regarding BYU and Utah's relative number of fans by citing the television ratings of BYU and Utah's NIT Bowl appearances. During the debate, I was also surprised to learn that a C-USA or MAC school had about the same following as Oklahoma judging by the Aqua Velva Sun Bowl's ratings when Oklahoma played in it.

Ha... I'm pretty sure, if there is one thing BYU can match... it's walk-ons that dream of just running down the tunnel. And we had our own Rudy, do you remember Meikle? That kid had no business, physically, being on the team, but had a fearless heart that hasn't been seen on the team since... IMHO.

The WCC knew exactly what they were getting--a temporary BYU move while BYU waited for a BCS invite.
I really hope not. And I don't believe it. There may be some power that be, but he is in the minority, I' sure hope.
The schools could make a binding contract among themselves rather than merely with the conference. So TX would have to pay each other team $3m rather than paying the whole conference $27M, for example.
I also think the NY Times article is interesting in that Louisville really doesn't look all that attractive. It has fewer fans than Utah.
USF (#53) would be the 7th ranked program in the Pac 12, just behind ASU. Actually, I was kind of surprised how low many of the Pac 12 teams were. BYU would be just below UW -- a solid 5th place. I've made jokes about Colorado being sloppy seconds, but I didn't realize how little support they got in Denver. UCF also comes in at #55. Boise's #57
Here you go Big 12 -- add BYU, Boise, West Virginia (#29 -- nice!), UCF and USF.

Here are the TV ratings for bowl games that CMBF alluded to below. These have been roundly mocked here, but I'm still waiting for better data. I frankly am not sure what, if any, conclusions can be drawn from them.
