I didn't go to Utah, but it's/its is one I know. I always seem to forget effect/affect.

Also, I should have said a vast six state region, adding New Mexico.

First, troll seems to me a supremely mindless charge. Like defaulting to profanity when you're mad as hell and the right words elude you. What is a troll? Isn't it somebody who manipulates emotions with statements he may not really hold or believe, sincerity being secondary to the objective of evoking reaction?

How could anyone doubt my sincerity? I was born a seventh generation Mormon, lived in Salt Lake or on a mission from ages 7 to 24, have family who have been BYU professors and administrators. I know a lot about BYU, and I don't like much that I know about BYU. I really don't. I'm not trolling. I actually do dislike BYU, and I'm not alone. The PAC administrators feel exactly as I do about BYU (yet, as I've said, the BYU professors are mostly amazing and good individuals). (I was actually disappointed in the hostile reaction initially by Husky alumni at Michael Young because of his BYU degree.)

So, Nik, for me, BYU is at the left side of indifference. As for Utah, in a nutshell, here is why it is special: it is the only university of it's kind in a vast five state region. I've said that Utah is a poor man's UW, but really I think it's a little more than that. You may retort that this vast five state region puts you to sleep. I can see why you might say that on some level. But one of the pleasures of moving away from your rots and getting a little older is that when you return you see your original homeland with fresh eyes. This was reinforced when I spent the past week in Jackson Hole after a 25 year absence.
I'm neither crazy mad or angry mad. Your protestation against my charge that you are trolling (along with an astutely accurate definition) confirms your aim is to, in your words: "manipulate emotions with statements [you] may not really hold or believe, sincerity being secondary to the objective of evoking reaction."

What's more, my charge as made in my post was well thought out and my words were carefully chosen. As a follow up, I suggest you strive for reconciliation with the family members of which you speak, BYU and the church and stop projecting your anger and frustrations on BYU fans and faithful LDS in general here on this message board.

You are right. You are not alone. Many people in this world suffer needlessly from irrational fear and loathing. Happiness is a choice.

The effect of the wrong affect on on this board can significant. It's one of the more interesting thing about CUF and its participants. The way SU candidly acknowledges his typographical errors is, however, quite affecting, which is not an effect he intended, I'll wager.

                I'll second the question.

I started another thread in the Back Fence where the extent of Utah's academic irrelevance can be explored in greater depth.

You should probably include the Dakotas too. And maybe Alaska.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

                      • Chip Brown earlier today...

Whether it was the political pressure put on Texas over the weekend or the Longhorns' determination to hold onto their own television network, it appears Texas is going to take its time before making any decisions about UT's future.

A source close to Texas said UT's commitment to the Longhorn Network has caused Texas officials to explore all possible scenarios involving what's left of the Big 12 before contemplating a potential jump to the Pac-12.

The Pac-12 emerged as a very real destination for Texas on Friday when Oklahoma president David Boren said no one has been more active than the Sooners in exploring potential conference homes. Boren added that OU would not be a wallflower in any college realignment.

But Texas would not be allowed to preserve the Longhorn Network as it is currently contracted in the Pac-12, where there is equal revenue sharing. Sources close to the situation have said Texas could re-work LHN to accommodate the Pac-12, but it would mean Texas giving up much of the $300 million it is set to earn from ESPN over the next 20 years.

Orangebloods.com reported on Friday night that Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe held an emergency conference call with Big 12 presidents excluding Texas, Oklahoma and Texas A&M.

Sources said Beebe told the remaining Big 12 presidents to "work on Texas" with hope the Longhorns would stay in the Big 12 and possibly force OU to reconsider any thought of moving to the Pac-12.

A source close to Texas on Monday said the Longhorns will not make a quick decision and that a new possible scenario would include a potential partnership with members of the Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference.

Such a partnership would include Texas' ability to maintain the Longhorn Network, the source said without giving further details.

Sources in the Texas Legislature on Sunday told Orangebloods.com pressure would be put on UT president Bill Powers and athletic director DeLoss Dodds to slow down any movement toward the Pac-12 or any movement that would collapse the Big 12.

                        Stay tuned.
                        Some comments:

                        (1) If OU bolts to the Pac-12 or something then they may have to do it alone. I wonder how not having Texas tag alone will influence their decision.

                        (2) It seems the Texas legislature has no plans at the moment to do anything according comments in the NYT article. It seems now that Chip is no longer stating the legislature will get involved as he stated before.

                        (3) This rumored partnership between the ACC and the Big 12 is interesting. Are they going to gang up on the SEC and stop scheduling games with them or something? Of course, FSU/FL are obligated by law to play each other. Or is this some kind of contingency plan in case Texas/OU/Tech/OSU go west and the SEC grabs some teams from the ACC? In short, the Big 12 merges with the ACC to form a super conference and in the process gets rid of some dead weight (e.g. Baylor, ISU, etc.) and adds new schools (e.g. BYU, ND, Pitt, etc.).

                          • The Big 12 is completely stable....

In the current environment - if A&M really does leave to go the SEC - I think it's easier to envision big chunks of the Big 12 going elsewhere (with BYU - for BYU's sake), than it is to envision BYU and two other teams signing on for a 12-team Big 12. If A&M were to announce that it's not leaving (& of course, that the SEC isn't expanding), BYU would be a great fit into the Big 12.

If A&M doesn't actually come back, the Big 12 won't be a safe place until it gets to 16 teams, which means adding 7 -ND (a longshot!), BYU, Louisville, TCU, AFA, and then who? Cincinnati? Pitt? Memphis? West Virginia?

Big 12 is a long way from stability.

But I do think the Big (L)East is less stable.
if OU/UT are committed. Simple as that. BYU will join this week if Boren shuts his mouth and lets UT get this done. UT by the day is finding its situation more and more unstable. It needs BYU or someone like it to replace aTm pronto. Otherwise it will be forced into a Pac 16 that will go from a nice place for the Utes to a freakin nightmare.

As for the old Norte, I'm rather enjoying this. KU/ISU/KSUck will cling to the Big 12 til the bitter end collecting exit fees and damages as they come available. Then, we'll either repopulate the Big 12 and use the Fox Sports/ESPN rivalry to our advantage or we'll fold it into the Big East. It really doesn't matter. Honestly, KU/KSUck/ISU/Baylor/Mizzou could be sitting on a huge pile of money in 6 months, own the Big 12's AQ status, a number of bowl contracts and looking for some like minded partners. This four 16 team conference talk is malarkey. It may happen, but it won't last. You cannot put OU/UT/USC/Stanford/Cal in the same league. Too many egos and not enough wins. And that doesn't include OkieState/Tech trash UT/OU will drag w/ them.

Does Stanford understand how humiliating it is to fly 4 hours to OKC (losing two hours to time zone), ride a bus 2hours to Stoolwater, lodge at the Ramada Inn on the Cimmaron Turnpike, eat a pre-game meal of salsbury steak and cold peas at the Perkins, get their arse kicked in front of 10000 empty seats by a bunch of Tejas boys who scored 17s on their ACTs, have crap thrown at the bus by a bunch of orange clad fans who never went to college afore taking the two hour trip back down to OKC to fly back to Kalifornia arriving at 8am on Sunday exhausted and demoralized. Exactly how long will this conference last?
