I don't know why he made the comments, if he had any thought they may stay in the Big 12 he destroyed any chance the Big 12 can survive with those comments, and if you are going to Pac 16 I don't see the point of the comments as well, just wait it out. I think he made them for the rabid fans who were hating looking like Texas' lap dogs, and the Big 12 is paying the price.
Stanford/Cal aren't stupid. Larry Scott may be stupid, but they aren't. And while CU may be incompetent, they know enough to not want the Whorns back in their league. That's a pretty good block against the Okies. Add T Boone's antics, the threat of lawsuits from the rest of the Big 12 and the no votes have all the ammo they need. Unless they are stupid. As for the Big 12, we've taken bigger hits than Boren's big mouth. Expect this to be resolved w/ BYU in the Big 12 by game time this Saturday.

Why would equivalency be part of the discussion? They're both flagships but they're not equivalent. I'm sure UW is ahead of Utah by most, if not all measures of academic prestige.

Utah is not in the same league as Cal, Standford, UCLA, USC, but they are a good school with some excellent programs, strong research, and a bright future. Other than the rivalry thing, I wouldn't have a problem sending a child there.
Harsh or not, it's my point of view. I'm not comparing them academically; that is absurd. In terms of unique attractive features, they are one and the same to me: no interest. Babs is right, btw: there are a number of schools that rate no interest. So this is not a specific slam on the U no matter how it sounds. Moliere pegged it.

fwiw, I counted and I think it's closer to 40.

          • I really had not paid attention to Borens comments. Reading them again makes me think he blew it, possibly, for UTs chances in the Pac16...it just reads like a guy who holds an ace or two but wants everyone else to think he's got the boat.

It makes so much damn sense to see a Pac16 that I would still tip my hat in favor of it but Boren should be quiet.

What statements are you talking about? I haven't seen anything that couldn't be read as posturing.
At least the Big Ten went after a big-time addition in Nebraska; the Pac-10 wanted a game so badly, it added Utah

I can respect. Rhodes Scholar/politician I get a bit skeptical. I cannot imagine a Kanzas politician arguing about who enters the room first. Something to the effect of, "Gawd bless em, their britches are too small." And we've had some big time politicians in Kanzas. Guys like Eisenhower.

Wow... you mean a family from texas has no interest in sending his kids to his alumni's rival 1400 miles away? I am completely shocked.

I'm not sure if it was you, but somebody mentioned that many people aren't even aware that BYU and Utah are separate schools, or they think Utah is a sort of extension campus. Admittedly, it's completely ignorant, and Utah fans probably shouldn't get too concerned about what these types know about them, but it was a surprisingly common viewpoint I ran into. Maybe PAC 12 will change that.

                    • It might be posturing, but that doesn't change the fact that it made the Big 12's job of trying to get teams like BYU, Pitt, WVU to think there is any shot at Big 12 stability MUCH harder.

I read comments from WVU's AD from a reporter that he thinks the Big 12 is going to dissolve and that WVU is a good SEC candidate(fat chance imo), doesn't sound like the comments of a school that could be convinced to join.

I don't know much about the U but knowing my children's IQ scores, work ethic and grades, I will be disappointed in anything but Princeton, Penn, Stanford, Columbia, etc.

I would only be more disappointed if they went to Dartmouth, I guess.

Their mom is brilliant and their grandparents even moreso. They only got work ethic from me.

OU is a very underrated school. Dallas is practically run by Sooners

That's because OU pays all the national merit scholars from Texas lots and lots of money to go to school there.

I have found this to be the case.

This was easily the most TIC post I've ever written.

I mean, my kids are really smart but only Highland Parkers say stuff like I just wrote...
