Guys with ugly girlfriends still claim their girlfriends are not ugly. Of course we are in love with independence that is where we are due to our own free will and choice. Nobody stands and shouts "I am a moron and I hate my status in life!" However, guys with ugly girlfriends dump their ugly girlfriends when an average looking girl comes along. The folks running BYU like $$. I doubt they turn down the Big 12. There is no way Dave Rose would have stuck around BYU if he thought the decision makers were wired that way.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostSeriously? I really think BYU is in love with the independence idea. Exposure for the church and all that. In their minds, I believe that they feel that they need to give independence the old college try for a few years before cutting the cord. I hope to the high heavens that they wouldn't turn down a Big 12 invite, but I'm guessing they will (unless we get major, major concessions). This isn't just pessimism speaking.
Right now we love independence because our last girlfriend was a fat and ugly trucker girl from Wamsutter. We were sick of her using our money to pay for the old tires she kept putting on the roof of her double wide. Our new girlfriend, we will call her the self-dancing Billy Idol, is not exactly beautiful but she has teethe, no STDs and we get to keep our own money.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

I don't understand why anyone thinks independence = more exposure than B12. It doesn't. If they want exposure, they'll join the B12, and they'll probably get the right to broadcast a game or 2 on BYUTV and maybe some rebroadcast rights. That's what they have now. 2 games on BYUTV this year.Originally posted by LiveCoug View PostSeriously? I really think BYU is in love with the independence idea. Exposure for the church and all that. Plus B12 = twice as much money and you can buy a lot of exposure for an extra 12M per year.
Finally, B12 provides much more exposure for Basketball etc.

How many games to we have on ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 this year? How many could we expect to have broadcast on those stations if we were in the B12?Originally posted by Jacob View PostI don't understand why anyone thinks independence = more exposure than B12. Stop thinking about it. Clearly BYU has poured these resources into sports because they want to be irrelevent and Dave Rose would stick around to work for idiots!Originally posted by Jacob View PostI don't understand why anyone thinks independence = more exposure than B12. Oh I don't think that at all. Big 12 would be much more exposure IMO.Originally posted by Jacob View PostI don't understand why anyone thinks independence = more exposure than B12. It doesn't. I think the reasons BYU admin would consider staying independent have nothing to do with exposure and everything to do with being able to call all the shots.Originally posted by Jacob View PostI don't understand why anyone thinks independence = more exposure than B12. Would these reasons for staying independent change if BYU had no (or less of a) contract with ESPN? i.e. the athletic program doesn't come close to paying for itself and require a good amount of tithe payer money to support it. Sometimes it pays to give up a little flexibility for a little security. Granted that the Big 12 in its current condition isn't all that secure right now.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostI think the reasons BYU admin would consider staying independent have nothing to do with exposure and everything to do with being able to call all the shots."If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.

Obviously there are deal-breakers, but I don't think they feel they need to call all the shots. Deal-breakers I see:Originally posted by pellegrino View PostI think the reasons BYU admin would consider staying independent have nothing to do with exposure and everything to do with being able to call all the shots.
- Sunday play
- Flexibility with and content for BYUtv
- Medium- to long-term stability of the league
What would the others be?
BYU has been independent for less than a year now. It has plenty of experience working within a league structureGive 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
