  • Goldmine of quotes in this oral history of Mizzou's move to the SEC. Lots of insight into the Big 12's dysfunction from some people who really do not like Texas and Oklahoma, or at least those schools' leaders.

A number of people thought that when the expansion talks were going on.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

                  • I have no insider information, and someone somewhere has probably suggested this, but I think that the Big 12 ultimately dropped expansion because they were hoping for a current P5 school to join. I don't know if the Big 12 reached out, or if they hoped that a current P5 school would express interest, but my guess is that if one school had agreed to join then the Big 12 would have quickly jumped and taken BYU. The ACC invited Louisville, the Big 12 invited TCU, and the Pac 10 invited Utah (despite BYU having a better overall athletic program, bigger football stadium, larger basketball arena, more fans, and being worth more money). No P5 conference has invited 2 outsiders, and the Big 12 already invited TCU a few years ago.

I had this thought as well, but if that's true, why not just make a few phone calls and ask around? I guess you lose the benefit of the NDAs, but it seems like there are a lot of other ways to gauge P5 schools' interest without inviting 20 non-P5 schools to participate in a dog and pony show only to award no blue ribbons.

Why not do a few phone calls and see what was out there for the whole damn thing? What a cluster.

It was supposed to be driven by data. Data that has been out there in the public domain for many years. Data that their consultants surely provided to them well before the July 19th announcement. The process was a mockery of the 20 schools that participated.

If this is true they did a terrible job. 125K extra per team?
