Finally someone in Austin is talking expansion...

Strengthening will be key to Big 12’s long-term survival

The Big 12 enters its fifth season as a 10-school conference, and never has the league’s status been lower.


Lack of success on the football field. No playoff team, in either the two-team or four-team format, since 2009. Constant tremors of instability and discontent, from the Longhorn Network to expansion debates.


The conference is not in danger of expiring. This is not summer 2010, when after a memorable June weekend the Big 12 was in red alert. Its immediate survival was not assured. But the Big 12 clearly is hurting.


Its long-term survival is questionable. The grant-of-rights, which has secured schools’ television money to the conference, has stabilized conference realignment. Since the Big 12, Pac-12 and ACC signed grant-of-rights, no major school has jumped ship. The Big 12 will be here in 2020.


Yet for the Big 12 to be here in 2025, it has to get stronger. Competitively. Cohesively. Marketability.


Does that mean expansion to 12 teams? OU president David Boren thinks so, telling us in June that the Big 12 should be “choosy” and “selective” but should strive to get back to 12 schools.


Boren is right. The Big 12 needs to be 12 schools. But it has to be the right 12. Adding schools just to count to a dozen, or adding schools for convenience, will not save the conference.


The answer is clear. The Big 12 should add Brigham Young and Boise State. Here’s the case for the Cougars and the Broncos:

BYU is a prestigious university. Some in academia will not promote the attributes of BYU, but that’s mostly politics. Brigham Young by virtually any measure is an outstanding school.


Boise State, on the other hand, makes Louisville look like Oxford. Some (Texas, Texas, Texas) didn’t want the ‘Ville in the Big 12, and part of that was academic snobbery.

The Big 12 should add BYU but let the PAC-12 have BSU.

and, they won't be available much longer. The P12 will realize what kind of money BYU can bring to the table...not take...by putting BYU and Utah and back together as they say in Provo, "as God intended."


Maybe the BIG MAN would prefer BYU/TCU/Baylor as the new and improved "Holy War."

i learned yesterday that in the past 40 years, Texas has won 7 outright conference championships. lol.

I learned today that USC's outright conference championships the last 40 years is really similar to Texas. During that time, USC has won 8 outright conference championships.

Yeah, I also learned today the Heisman winners and national championships during that 40-year span are also pretty similar for USC and Texas after tossing USC's two NCs and one Heisman for cheating.
