  • Can someone link to the Dick Harmon column where he talks about some ceremonial dance or sign of friendship that was performed when some Polynesian recruit signed on with BYU. I think it involved Haloti Ngata.

Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

        LOL

He was quoting Vai on that one. Ngata did the dance and was headed to BYU.
        Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Maybe Harmon could do the bit about going to talk to the Indian Chief in the mountains about what will happen to BYU.

You referring to the Big-12 or my public announcement of dry humping?

I really think that some of you have this caricature (sp?) of LDS Church leadership built up in your minds and it affects how you approach BYU sports. 1.) The men leading the Church value exposure and money and while they value the uniqueness of BYU they understand that uniqueness is pointless unless there is a venue for exposure. BYUTV is nice, but they are neither as simple or suffering from tunnell vision as many would have us think. 2.) I think Dave Rose, and Sister Dave Rose, really love BYU but there is no way anyone could convince me he would have agreed to a contract extension if he believed in his heart that BYU sought no higher than WCC for BYU hoops. I pointed to Dave Rose and how he would approach what I believe to be his best chance to jump, after the attention Jimmer was going to provide for BYU this year, for a more glorious ship back when this was announced last fall. I thought if Dave stays it is an indicator that BYU has goals to move on up. I always believed that the Big 12 would show interest, either after aTm or Mizzou split or when the movement to return to 12 came along, but if BYU was genuinely happy with the long term marriage of football independence and WCC for all other sports then Rose would depart for greener pastures. Rose did not depart.

But yeah, I am pretty much rock solid and nipple hardening cool, thanks for noticing!

I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

The dance of submission. Big ol Haloti dancing in front of his future head coach and Crowton was trying to pick grizzle out of his teethe and thinking up plays for his Madden football on a napkin!

LOL! One of the greatest Harmon pieces ever.

If our leaders are the corporate opportunists that they are purported to be, then the Big 12 is obviously the best move. Mormons are a well-known quantity in the West, so further exposure there provides decreasing returns. But futher exposure in an area of the country that still knows little about the quirky restored gospel, actually still believes in God, and sees America as God's Land, well, that's the motherlode folks.

Well all that and the reality that the midwestern schools are probably the remaining small group that would abide a "University" sponsored by the LDS Church. The reality is the Big-12 needs to expand and BYU presents a compelling case financially for the Big-12, the challenge for BYU is its baggage and non-negotiables. That baggage and BYU's values are just not as offensive to Midwestern farmers daughters who make you feel allright!

Just as Utah wanting to run around with a bunch of dope smoking hippies is a good fit for the vision Utah has of itself, the Big-12 is a good fit for BYU. We all overestimate our place in the world!

Didn't that report come from Harmon's brief BYU insider adventure when he was still with the PDH? Soon after that he went to the DesNews and left the BYU insider effort. I don't know if it is available to link.

But it was indeed a legendary report, and one that was very moving. But Ngata still went to Oregon.

                            • Best line of Dick Harmons article: www.deseretnews.com

So, in conclusion, if you hear reports out of Texas or Oklahoma that BYU is not interested in the Big 12, it is only an interpretation of BYU negotiating its talking points.
He's been really quiet, and has a history of kinda being like a Chip Brown of BYU when it comes to saying what BYU wants to be heard. So the article made me feel a little warm and fuzzy, but really goes out of its way to defend the possibility of saying "no" to the Big 12.

Because as GN suggests, later on this week he'll be writing about how BYU was tough in the negotiations, holding true to its principles and the things that are most important to the university: no sunday play, security, and exposure. It will surely move us all, even more so because BYU will be in the Big 12.

In fact, I bet this story shows up in some YM instruction book some years down the road.

But I think you make an interesting point. Wrubell and Harmon, the two "journalists" closest to the program, have produce practically nothing on this whole episode. Given their friendly relationship with the BYU, I think that speaks volumes.

But no doubt they already have a number of stories written and ready for print.
