Total honesty - without board persona or trolling:

I second your "hate is never a good thing" as closest to the best answer.

Having a favorite team that you support and having the desire for your team to win all of their games is great. But I think we cross the line of following the teachings of Jesus Christ when we dislike our team's rival to the point that we describe it as hate and even get to the point of wanting bad things for them.

Gordon Monson, as much as I think the guy is a dork, probably best describes how we "should" feel about our teams rival when he goes off about not cheering for or against anyone and just enjoying the competition. Note - I'm talking about when that rival is just playing some other random team. Of course you want them to lose when your favorite team is playing them. Or better said, you want your team to win.

But I have a hard time imagining that Christ would be "OK" with one of his followers hating BYU. Of course, I also think that he wouldn't want one of his followers to hate the U either. I mean, we are talking about the guy who said love your enemies and forgive everyone that offends you - including the fellas nailing you to a cross to crucify you. I imagine he would find any reason we could give to "hate" a rival sport team fairly trivial and silly.

I admit that my initial post on this subject was a little trolling.

But the best trolling efforts tend to include some amount of truth. I don't think anyone's fandom will be part of any final judgement interview or anything. I do think in the end a lot of people are going to discover that their hate of a rival was kind of silly - and they are going to wish they had figured that out much sooner...

So I suppose the answer is in the definition of what you think "OK" means.

It just warms my heart to know that Bronco was so concerned about Utah, knowing that if BYU didn't throw that game to the Utes, Utah would be nearly into November without a single D1 FBS win. Makes me proud to support a school and team so concerned about their rival's feelings.

Bronco is a hero. Football truly is 5th.

Hey, when I first started CaliforniaCoug remarked, "This place can be hell for newbies." He's right. There's a certain amount of hazing that goes on, but for the most part, people just want you to follow unwritten board customs until you've "earned your stripes," so to speak. Unfortunately for you (and for me, quite frankly), you' and I developed a "reputation" on the board quite early, which means people will call you out for even the most minor infraction. Don't sweat it. Think of it like boot camp, and just be glad a broomhandle isn't involved.

Jake Heaps has more empathy and charity for his fellow man in his non-throwing arm than ANYONE who has ever played football at the U has in their entire body!

We're talking about a dude who, after Bronco gave him the plan to help raise Ute fan spirits everywhere, simply responded with "thy will be done." How else can you explain BYU's first offensive drive of that game? What about the subsequent turnovers?

That young man sacrificed himself and his football season this year in order to lift and help his brother, the Utes. But he would never admit to it himself...he's much to humble for that. He descended below all things that fateful day in September.

All that remains now is the glorious return. A day we must all prepared for, for no man except Bronco knows when it will happen.
