I think Chip is FOS on BYU turning down the B12.

At least I hope so.

Since Chip Brown carries the water for the Longhorns, I suspect it's just DeLoss trying to get leverage on whatever point BYU may be negotiating. Some in the Big 12 may want TCU over BYU, but Texas isn't one of them. If the Longhorns wanted TCU in the conference, they would already be in.

For the record, I have no direct connection to BYU's AD at all. It seems pretty clear to me, however, that this is simply another leverage leak by UT to get word around town that the Big 12 has a BATNA to BYU. Nothing to see here. The fact that one of Chip's sources says BYU athletics can draw on the church for financial support should raise some red flags - not everything that Chip reports is reality.

Here's Bronco's reply when asked by Greg Wrubell about news Wednesday that the Big 12 was considering BYU:

"It is not hourly, but I hear it almost every day. The reality of it is, there is conference realignment happening. There is this push for haves and have-nots, for superconferences, and not superconferences.

"I love the symbolic part of independence, with ourselves, Notre Dame, Army, Navy and schools that have something substantial besides academics and sport, with another purpose. And if we had [BCS] access, the same access as others, into the BCS bowl system with that, I wouldn't consider [giving up independence] at all.

"At some point, though, I don't want to be on the outside looking in, and I would hope to be able to lead, and play, and coach this team this year to a level that would be respectable and say, 'somebody has gotta have BYU and have those conferences saying, 'gotta have 'em, gotta have 'em, gotta have 'em.' And if it came down to that, then you would have to consider it, if college football is moving that way, to get access at the highest stage, at the highest level, so you don't have to be undefeated to get access to those [BCS] games."

For the record, I have a direct connection to the BYU admin, but I would never ask this person to divulge any information in an ongoing negotiation because

a) They probably wouldn't divulge anything anyway
b) I don't want to get them in trouble if they did

I honestly think you may be correct. While I don't like reading any bad news anymore than any of you guys do, I am very confident that Chip is dead wrong on this issue. He claimed a highly placed source at BYU the first time he pulled this TCU thing a couple days ago and then went on to list very specific BYU concerns. I don't believe any highly placed BYU source would have been that loose lipped or specific. Today his guy is just highly placed, not a BYU guy but surprisingly the supposed BYU concerns are cut and pasted from the earlier blurb.

I am far too emotionally tied to this one...long story and not for public consumption but this will hurt if we don't say yes. Honestly, I don't think I would be able to continue supporting BYU athletics if we don't and I spoke with a good guy on Sunday and he told me he'll never give a penny again if we don't take an offer.

I think a lot are in that camp.
