It's considered a recruiting advantage, at least by aTm. My response, start your own network and stop whining.Originally posted by TripletDaddy View Postwhy is there so much hubbub about HS broadcast rights?
The NCAA already said no college network can broadcast HS games for at least a year, maybe longer while they investigate the impact of such a move."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

No, from what I understand the restrictions only apply to live events. Rebroadcast on third-tier networks will be permitted by the conference and the TV partners. And, I actually walked away wishing we had a little more clarification for non-football events, because I suspect the conference may want to encourage third-tier networks to pick up conference basketball games that aren't scooped up by first/second-tier packages.Originally posted by Cougarmandias View PostWould this apply to rebroadcasts? I'm sure if BYU asks for that clarification BYU can get it, because no one is threatened by BYU-TV.
I suppose those details probably haven't been worked out yet.

Let me pontificate if you will about the whole situation. I've been reading a book called "Espn those guys have all the fun" which is basically the history of espn and such (on a tangental note I was surprised with how much Warren Buffet has been involved in ESPN). Anyway, the part I am in right now talks about Espn getting a full NFL season in 1998 and what it meant. Basically, to pay what they did for the Sunday night football games they made deals with every sattellite and cable company that the subcriber fees would for ESPN (they are usually about $3.50 per member per month) go up 20% EVERY YEAR. Over the 7 year contract the compounded interest ends up at 3 times from where it started.
So what does this mean to big 12 and such? Well ESPN owns the Longhorn network and they have contracted to get 2 football games a year on the network. They are paying 20 million a year to Texas (plus some profit share) and they paid a large amount to Rice (the first game on the network) and to Kansas (something like $5 million per game) to broadcast the game. My guess is that they figure there are ~10 million cable subscribers who will want the longhorn network. If they can get $.50 per subscriber per month they are going to make a boatload of money. Then they start upping the subscriber fees every year to make the LHN a big time money maker. They are out of the B1G network deal and the PAC-12 deal. Texas and ND are the only schools left that can pull this kind of money for them. Since Texas has a share of the profits they don't want to lose or share this giant windfall. I would not be surprised for espn to shoot for the same goal with ND as soon as their contract is up. In fact, that is probably why ND and texas are such butt buddies these days.
Oklahoma & aTm have seen this giant windfall for Texas (being fair everyone in the big12 has) and are trying everything they can to not let Texas get such an advantage. aTm is fleeing and Oklahoma is doing everything they can to get some leverage. Why doesn't aTm and Oklahoma start their own networks? Because it wont be close to as big as the LHN (ie they can't get the subscribers that texas can). If there was a Big12 network like the BTN and the soon to be Pac12 network it would be boon to everyone in their conference. Texas wouldn't make as much as they would with just the LHN but it would still get a nice amount.
So where do byu, west va, louisville & tcu fit? where they currently are until LHN issue gets resolved."Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. BYU fits in as the 10th team in the Big 12 in 2012 getting an extra $5M on top of their tier 1 and 2 TV share to play Texas on the LHN with rebroadcast rights of the game for on their BYUtv app selling ad space to NuSkin and other MLM's in Utah Valley.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostLet me pontificate if you will about the whole situation. BTW, you do realize that Florida has been doing pretty much the same thing that Texas is doing with the LHN for some time now, right? UF gets something like $10M per year from the Sun Sports Network (aka. "Gator Network"), formerly the sunshine network, for all the broadcast rights, etc. That network even broadcast high school sports (see below).Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostLet me pontificate if you will about the whole situation. Also, Texas is paying for a lot of overhead out of their share from ESPN (which is $15M not $20M). It was mentioned that 17% off the top goes to IMG College and another $5M is going straight to academics and not the athletic budget.

I didn't know the song had lyrics. All I ever hear is the crowd yelling, "Go Utes!" when the band is done.Originally posted by PolyCougar View PostHa ha ha... that song is so awesome:
