Here are my quick takes on the football-plus-basketball rankings:
• I don't think anyone would argue with Ohio State (No. 1) and Texas (No. 2) as the two most "valuable" college sports programs. Had our formula gone back a year to include the first of Florida's back-to-back NCAA basketball titles, the Gators would be in the top three.


• BYU (No. 6) did the right thing to roll the dice as an independent. Of course, that status could be short-lived in the real world and will not exist in ours. Notre Dame (No. 20) is the next highest independent, a much more realistic ranking than we're often led to believe due to its outdated football reputation.


• Not surprisingly, Boise State (No. 52) is the highest-ranked school outside the current BCS conferences. The Broncos come in ahead of 18 current BCS members, including Duke (No. 54). The Blue Devils' abysmal football fortunes are offset only so much by the Coach K basketball empire.


• Back-to-back seasons at the top of the RPI have vaulted Kansas (5.8) ahead of Duke (6.0) in the five-year college basketball rankings. Continually underrated Pitt (9.4) is the only other school with a single-digit RPI average. There is a measurable drop after the Panthers, as Tennessee (17.2) is fourth on the hardwood over the past five years.


• At No. 90, Colorado is the lowest-ranked BCS member in the overall index (congratulations, Pac-12!). For the moment, this is also our cutoff point for the "new" Division I. This cut line will likely move a bit as we evaluate and insert the top basketball-centric, non-FBS schools.




Don't hold me to it, but it seems our model is pointing toward something like 10 power conferences of a dozen members each. Eight of those leagues (96 teams) will make up DI football and lead to a tidy season-ending playoff among the winners of the respective conference championship games. Two (or more) "power" leagues will be comprised of the very best basketball-only schools at the top of Division I. That will leave us with up to 225 existing D-1 basketball schools and potential changes to the NCAA tournament.

Cal and Stanford would be radioactive in a conference where Bob Jones University had a veto. It is all relative isn't it? It is about people's prejudices and not really merit.
