You may be right. Then again, it was Samuelson that said it, not me.
At any rate, what's your answer to the questions in my post? How do you think you (and others) will react to the inevitable years of famine that come with tougher competition?
I don't plan to be famished. I plan on feasting every now and then, all the while enjoying the meal.
I suspect this post is far more accurate than you even know.
If the deal really does get put together, pretty sure you're gonna find out.
"We should remember that one man is much the same as another, and that he is best who is trained in the severest school." -Thucydides
"Study strategy over the years and achieve the spirit of the warrior. Today is victory over yourself of yesterday; tomorrow is your victory over lesser men."
I think we would all be excited to have these kind of teams in the Marriott Center.
But... I do think it's legitimate to wonder how excited we would still be if Kansas hammered us in Provo nine times out of 10.
And, of course, the same questions can be asked about football. I think it's safe to say our 2010 team would have struggled to win more than four games with a Big 12 schedule last season.
Really, other than Texas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, nobody in the Big 12 has ever been consistently good enough to be real contenders in any national sense. Is BYU different or better than the others? Maybe. But, I don't really know.
I think we would be naive not to realize these possibilities and to consider their implications. I'm really not trying to be a buzz kill here, but I'm curious how the fan base would react to that. I'm really not sure how I would...
If BYU makes the NCAA tournament regularly, I don't care what place they come in the conference. In the WCC we would have to win the conference every year to get an at large birth if we don't win the tourney.
In football, I suspect the team will have special years every five years or so and have good years most other years.
Yes, I have always maintained such. I think they will compete, of course. And right now, the only PAC teams with worse Rose Bowl records than the Utes are Colorado, the Zoo and the Zeroes. I guess you can throw Kal in there, too. They go back to the 50s since their last win.
I have also been a NoCho fan and don't appreciate BYU fans that trash him. Utah hiring him was a solid move.

What are the implications? In most years BYU is not as good as UT and OU? Duh...of course BYU isn't. How can BYU get better and play at the highest level if they don't play with the best competition? It is called raising the bar. I think BYU has heard that phrase somewhere before...If people are afraid of losing then they need to schedule a doctor's apt, take a deep breath, turn their head and cough, while their doctor checks to see if their nuts are working properly. Bunch of pussies.

I disagree about Norm Chow. The guy's issue with interpersonal relationships makes it a real matches-dynamite issue. I doubt he stays at Utah longer than three years.

I was talking about the implications for fan support, mostly. It's great to say "raise the bar" and all that. But the reality of being in a BCS conference means that you can be a pretty darn good team and still only win seven games some years.
Is this going to be a shock to the BYU fanbase? Or do you think most of them are prepared for it?

His longevity there isnt at issue. He provides a smoother transition to the PAC than anyone else that was available, he provides instant credibility to new recruits, and he is a proven winner.
His people skills sucked the years in which he coached Heisman winners and national champs.
Right now the U has a problem under center with a kid that could very well be a headcase and lack confidence. He is possible injured. The Utes need a guy that will instill confidence and draw some heat away from the QB. They also need to establish a recruiting pipeline and having him there will help them greatly.
He will do well at the U and the Utes are lucky to have him. I concede that he might bolt in a few years. So did Urban.
Why are people always down on NoCho? Seriously, don't get it. Seems like BYU fans (not saying you, specifically shoganai) want to tap dance on his grave. Very unappreciative.

That's really the key for me. I think it will be a little rough at first, but BYU will find a way to nut up and compete.
