  • The Big 12 is probably the second best basketball conference in the country, maybe third best at worst. The basketball games would be a huuuge step up alone. If I were Rose, I would quit if BYU turned down a Big 12 invite.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Not to mention baseball and track. I realize football drives everything, but when you have your very good basketball program and your nonrevenue sports stranded, you have to take the invite if it comes from the Big 12. Even if it is a lateral move in football (it is huge step up IMO), the benefit to the rest of the athletic department would be phenomenal.

I am thinking that the quoted AD is from one of the schools that doesn't have the resources to travel.

Baseball is the sport that could cause problems for BYU. They routinely play on Sunday and often have back to back games on the weekends. I think BYU would actually have to be limited to basketball and football because scheduling the minor sports would be too difficult with BYU.

Where did we consistently finish in the MWC in baseball?

Right, because baseball teams never play double headers.

3-4. Sometimes 2. We never finished ahead of TCU.

Why must you crush my dreams? How about double headers on Saturday when you play BYU? They'd go for that, right?

                • Goodwill is a myth. I have to believe that the Church's owned-industries haven't gotten as rich as they are on anything other than a clear-eyed assessment of what the world is about. If not, the 'goodwill' we had with Utah and with the MWC, which meant exactly squat when push came to shove, should have taught us something.
I think, perhaps, the only person who hates BYU fans more than ute fans hate BYU fans, is Bronco Mendenhall.

Here's Texas's baseball schedule. They didn't play a single doubleheader the entire year. I suppose there may have been a rain delay mixed in here are there.

And two thirds of BYU's games would be double headers since all of the games are three-game series that run Friday-Saturday-Sunday.

Small price to pay for Texas et al to bask in our deliciousness.

Maybe the prospect of padding their HR numbers in the thin air of Miller Park will sweeten the deal for them.

this seems like an insurmountable issue for each B12 school to play two Thurs-Fri-Sat series a year. Add to that the fact that no other conference has ever agreed to accomodate a No Sunday play rule before and that pretty much kills the BYU to B12 rumors.
                          Fitter. Happier. More Productive.

I never said insurmountable, but a ton of the smaller sports play on Sunday and I'm sure conference tourneys commonly have games on Sunday. I don't know if the Big 12 would be fine only having BYU for basketball and football, but BYU probably wouldn't be fine with it since I doubt the WCC would be cool with us staying in the conference with everything besides basketball.

Or it's the Baylor AD who is a Momo-hating fundamentalist.

I don't know if that's true, but this would be my Mom's theory.

Babs, don't lead them along. You know the problem. Tell them: Texas is just Cal Berkely wearing a long horn head dress.
