i think a lot of people are missing the boat and assuming his withdrawal is involuntary. i would be very, very surprised if it was, because not everyone that's bumpin uglies gets kicked out of byu. in fact, i know of quite a few people that have taken care of it in byu wards and haven't missed any school because of ecclesiastical endorsement problems. i'm sure he's heard advice from just about every person possible (coaching staff administrators, ecclesiastical leaders, etc.), but you don't just get kicked out of byu for having sex once.

Seriously, if Whit is savvy he'll tell recruits, "Look, this could happen to anyone. Do you want to give a school the power to alter the course of your life because you made a mistake like Uga did?"

Of course he needs to figure out how to say that and not freak out the moms of these kids directed mostly by testoterone.
"Hi Billy. We both know you wont be able to keep your dick in your pants as a Div-1 athlete, so why dont you save yourself the trouble and come on over to Utah. We won't kick you out when you succumb to the passions of the flesh like Corianton of old."

      Sadly, though, you are right.

How does the school handle a situation like this if it had been two students who didn't play sports? If they're not on a team from which to be dismissed, do they get booted as well? If so, is this why Unga and the girl are being booted?
Yes if they are normal students and this happens, they get booted as well.

My personal opinion if this situation happens to athlete or drama
major, if they decide on their own to get married (without pressure
from school since that isn't always the best option) then they are allowed to
          stay in school.

THis is pretty high profile, a BYU womens basketball player that everyone knows is dating Harvey Unga walking around pregnant. I think Harvey may have withdrawn because he figured he was gone anyways and wants to try and start working out for NFL scouts and get ready for the supplemental draft.

Or they could make sure he knew about birth control. That's what how most college graduates solve the problem. It's called being responsible. Planning your life. A 22 year old kid has sex with his girlfriend. That's hardly a felony.

                True.

I'm still curious what would happen if a student who wasn't an athlete did this. Do they get the same punishment? For consistency, BYU should either boot 'em all or boot nobody.

Edit: others have answered. Thanks for the info.

i agree with this 100%, and i think this is probably why he was under some heavy pressure to withdraw (at least from the team). it was ultimately his decision to withdraw (from school), no one else's.

one does not get automatically kicked out for getting down.

True. The HC bottom line is about control. It isn't a bad idea President Wilkinson came up with. Being conservative by nature or choice, I would like to see college campus's coming under a lot more control. If I didn't care about disgarding good people and especially good athletes, I would be in
favor of strict rules at all colleges and if you break them, you get kicked out.

A very public figure getting kicked out would always serve to be a great reminder to the general populace of what could happen.

That's what I'm thinking. Nothing in the press releases say anything about them getting kicked out. I can see getting kicked off their team (I mean, I can see that happening at BYU), but I don't think the university would boot them.

However, I think this might be up to the Bishops, ultimately. Art, help me out here. Can the Bishop yank an ecclesiastical endorsement if he wants? It seems like I've heard of this before. If the Bishop decides they're not worthy to be at the school, what can the student do (short of asking a civic leader to represent them)?

Good luck having that birth contol conversation with a Mormon kid (the ones who actually want to go to BYU).

yes, bishops can revoke endorsements at any time. i think there's an ecclesiastical appeals process, but i can't find anything specific about it in the honor code at this very moment.
