The PAC 10 expansion groundswell

Even though I haven't heard from Tarwater yet, I'll nevertheless opine.
I stated a couple months ago that I thought a Texas move to the Pac 10 was possible, I was the first one to say so. But my assumption was that Texas would do it with A&M because the Texas legislature wouldn't allow Texas to just move with Oklahoma.
What I didn't see is Texas moving along with five other Big 12 teams to the Pac 10. 12 teams makes a lot of sense, 16 teams makes a lot less sense competitively unless you're the Big 10 with its own TV network There's a problem with the size of your conference once you expand beyond 12. Essentially, you cease being a traditional conference for football. With two eight team divisions, the different divisions will have very little to do with each other. Assuming that the new Super 16 is formed and they avoid the Pac 10's mistakes of scheduling 9 conference games, each team will play 7 conference games against teams in its own division and then one game against the other division. The Super 16 is not going to produce a USC v. Oklahoma or USC v. Texas game every other year. This sounds like it is going to be a divided conference and although initially it sounds like they could make slightly more money on average than the SEC teams, I think as time goes by this conference is going to be increasingly viewed as essentially two conferences under one umbrella. This lack of cohesion was a huge problem in the old bloated WAC (the huge amount of shitty teams was the bigger problem though).
Oklahoma is attached at the hip with Texas. Oklahoma knows full well that it needs to maintain its rivalry with Texas to keep the recruiting pipeline going. Although Oklahoma and Texas haven't always been in the same conference, I think Oklahoma views the current arrangement- having Texas in the same conference- very good for recruiting. Oklahoma and Texas will work together. Ditto for Texas and aTm.
So, I'm not totally convinced that Texas and Oklahoma won't work to keep this together. Nebraska is a huge blow. The Big 12 could have lost Colorado and Missouri and replaced both teams with, say, Utah and BYU and not really skipped a beat. But Nebraska is different. Historically, Nebraska is easily a top 10, and probably close to a top 5 program. It's following is huge. Nevertheless, the power of the Big 12 really lies with Texas and Oklahoma- two current top 5 programs. A conference can be easily viable with Texas and Oklahoma in the mix. Maybe those two step back and realize that they could be better off together in the Big 12 rather than a bloated Super 16, and invite a couple schools to fill Colorado's and Nebraska's spots. And I also think that basketball needs to be considered. How do you leave Kansas behind and go to this new Super 16? K-State and Baylor were also very good this year. Aren't you better off for the long haul in both sports if you're Texas and Oklahoma if you stay put and add a couple teams to the Big 12 North (both of whom have been significantly more competitive than Colorado recently) rather than essentially signing up to be a sub-conference that has little to nothing to do with the other sub-conference in some confederacy of a 16 team super conference?Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Colorado is gone. Chip Brown on ESPN right now...
Still saying that UT, TT, aTm or now possiby BAYLOR is in. Could be announced today.
aTm still may go to SEC, but doubtful.
Mizzou to be most likely left out in the cold too along with KU, KSU, ISU and Baylor. MWC looks to be the conference to pick up teams, but Big East and SEC in play to pick up leftovers.

Wilner's latest:
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/college...nd-the-big-12/
Utes on the brink! Taste it Utefans; oh the agony and ecstasy.
I know the comments Wilner gets are not a cross section necessarily, but they invariably seem to say "take Utah and Colorado and no more; Utah but not Texas."
Meanwhile, on Utefans Y'sLife is conceding defeat. He's called it: Utah to the Pac 10.When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

The best part is that for everyone but SU, this thread has involved speculating about different scenarios, reporting news as it happens, wondering how it will all work out, etc.Originally posted by HuskyFreeNorthwest View PostI hope you people are recognizing what SU is giving this board latley, he is like Doc Gooden on coke, Hemmingway at Sloppy Joe's, Da Vinci painting Virgin of the Rocks.
In this thread he was the first to introduce to the board the Western Alliance that is now coming to pass, then immediatley started denying that Texas would want the P10, the P10 would want Texas, why would Texas destroy the history and tradition of Phogg Allen, Baylor will destory the plans, why not Kansas, Utah being paired with Kansas is a great consolation prize, claimed Texas racism for all white teams, Texas doesn't fit in the P10 because the sing "The Eyes of Texas" before games,
He gave a Pitt to the Big 10 prognostication. Made New Mexico a dark horse candidate for P10 expansion, and meant it. Colorado State is taking Colorado's spot in the B12. Dropped a "snapshot in time" bomb on Surfah.
Announced Utah to P10 a done deal. Claimed he never believed Utah leaving rumors and challenged those that said he did. Denounced articles as untrue because they were poorly written or misspelled.
Attacked BYU. Claimed the B12 had no interest in BYU. Said Utah and BYU are greater than Nebraska.
In reality that is only about half of it. That you people listened to waup and didn't give SU the MVP of the board is the greatest travesty in BYU/Utah related message board awards history. Stars can't burn this bright forever, hold on to it and embrace the memories while they burn.
SU you are the best and have carried the board for the last 2 months and I thank you my friend.
For SU, this thread is about being right! He's quick to make the obvious prediction based on the latest news, and quick to say he never made those predictions when the news changes. In the end, one of his predictions will be right, and that's the one that we'll hear about for the next few months. It's great theater.

Where'd you get the $60M profit figure? Usually these teams spend pretty much everything they make. BYU's expenses for football run in the $20M range.Originally posted by Ted Nugent View PostUT football generated $82M last season. About $60M was profit.

Denver Post reporting Buffs to Pac a done deal. If true, a monster development for the Utes. Means the Pac WILL expand, per the skeptic Wilner's new prophesy, and appeasing Texas is not its highest priority (for whatever reason).
This is movement in the right direction for the Utes. When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.
