The P12 should add the University of Texas - Southwestern. No sports teams but killer academics.

Years ago, one of my kids applied to Rice so I knew it was about the size of his large Texas high school (~5K) at the undergraduate level. Counting graduate students, Rice's student population almost doubles. Rice is about the same size as Princeton. Rice last went to a bowl game after the 2014 season where they beat Fresno St. in the Hawaii Bowl. The year before, Rice lost to Miss St. in the Liberty Bowl.

Do they get terrible fan support? We need to make sure they will fit in the P12.

Rice gets around 20K football fans for home games in a stadium that seats about 50K and upwards of 70K if the upper deck is opened. So less than half full...not sure what Rice was thinking when the stadium was built since Rice is a small school...and not Notre Dame in football. On the other hand, Rice stadium has hosted a Super Bowl and a famous JFK speech. On the balance, I think Rice just might make a good fit in the P12.

Yeah, SU nailed it again... they would be perfect for the Pac 12-2+1.

I think I read that Rice has like 52,000 living alumni so if they are getting 20,000 to show up that is really good. What is the percentage of UofU alumni that show up to an Ute game?

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Yeah, they should make UCLA stay... Then the Big 12 could pick them up for the LA market when the Pac 12-3 folds.

                  • Yeah, they should just move the Rose Bowl to SoFi Stadium and let the Big 10 blow up the PAC-12-2. No more PAC no more Rose bowl.

                    • Hey, has the Pac 12-2 signed a new TV deal yet?

                      2022-2023 Bowl Appearances:

                      Big 12 (10 Teams): 8
                      Pac 12 (12 Teams): 6

                      Big 12+4 (14 Teams): 11
                      Big 12-2+4 (12 Teams): 9
                      Pac 12-2 (10 Teams): 5

2022-2023 New Year's Six Bowl Appearances:

                      Big 12: 2 (+championship maybe)
                      Pac 12: 2

                      Big 12-2+4: 2 (+championship maybe)
                      Pac 12-2: 1

Maybe this will change when they invite SDSU and SMU.

George Kliavkoff better make it rain because there will be a bunch of Pac 12-2 athletic programs bleeding red if it doesn't...

                              • This may behind a paywall for some of you.

                                https://theathletic.com/4019705/2022.../?redirected=1

“ESPN will be prepared to split the Pac-12’s media rights with Amazon, but will not offer the conference significantly more than it pays for the Big 12. That will lead the Pac-12 to sell almost its entire media package to Amazon for a price that is slightly higher than what the Big 12 gets from ESPN and Fox. The Pac-12 will carve out a handful of prime-time football games that it then will sell to CBS.”
Notice that Ourand’s exact wording for the Amazon piece is “a price that is slightly higher than what the Big 12 gets from ESPN and Fox.” Slightly higher. Though an athletic director trying to balance his budget is not going to thumb his nose at an extra, say, $4 million a year, it’s not exactly game-changing. TV money is hardly the only revenue source for schools, and in fact the bump they will receive when the new 12-team College Football Playoff takes effect could be considerably more than that.

But … this is a negotiation. Ourand is making his prediction based on his current intel, but a month or two from now perhaps ESPN comes back to the table with a more palatable offer. Perhaps Fox carves out a piece, too.

Or perhaps Kliavkoff has overestimated the value of his league’s properties and is about to sign a deal that’s marginally more lucrative than the Big 12’s but comes at the cost of several million fewer Oregon-Washington viewers
