I was blown away by how big the Alta team is. They had 99 players listed on the roster, and all but 2-3 were juniors and seniors. Almost all were 6 ft plus. Only ~half of the Timpview team is over 6 ft. Alta's tight ends were both 6'4" 215 lbs. Alta is 0-3, but they have played three of the top five teams in the state. They will be fine and I wouldn't be surprised to seem them play Bingham again for the championship.
You realize that the only reason Alema Key ended up at Springville was because he wasn't going to get very much playing time at Timpview, right? That illustrates the fact that the best players in the state play at Timpview and the ones who are second tier end up playing for other schools.

I'm not saying that Timpview or Bingham coaches overtly recruit players or are guilty of breaking any rules, just that between the kids whose families move into the boundaries for football and kids that live elsewhere but enroll at the schools to play football, they are basically All-Star teams.

I don't really have a problem with it, but you have to admit that the coaches at Timpview and Bingham aren't taking the kids who would naturally be within the school boundaries and developing them into the best football teams in the state year in and year out.

So do you think they should unilaterally deny the transfer kids? Prior to six years ago, Timpview was competitive, but nothing like they are now. What you see now is a result of a solid coaching staff. They have built a dynasty. It will end someday, but they would be stupid to self-destruct.

Also, you must have missed one of my main points above. Most of the Timpview stars during their recent run either grew up or live in the area (Covey brothers, Luke Ashworth, Reynolds brothers, Bills brothers, Kaufusi, etc.). The guy that took Alema's spot on the roster when he left used to play on my flag football team. Great kid.

You know, the funny thing about Alema is that he would have been the number one back had he stayed, without question. The guy ahead of him (Bryson Mckenzie) was injured in the first or second game and was out for the rest of the season. Ironically, he ended up losing to Timpview in the championship game. Dumb move.

If HS football were a revenue generator than I would say otherwise, but I'm guessing HS football is a drain on local resources more than just the coach's salary.
In Texas the high school head coach can make more money than the head principal. The high school football coaches' contracts, however, are based upon a 226-day work year and a teacher's contract is based on a 187-day work year. Texas high school football brings in good money to offset the costs. Six-figure revenue in ticket sales is common among good 5A programs in North Texas and if they do well in the playoffs then they can add another $50K or even more. The booster club adds a lot to the revenue as well. I am not sure what our booster club made in t-shirts, program sales and concessions but I do know they made well over $20K in one night with an auction of donated items from businesses in the area. The area businesses also pay good money for ads on soft billboards along the sides of the fields and in the programs.

        • My two cents on HS football 'recruiting':

I live in South Jordan, my kids will walk to Bingham High School. In my ward alone, there are 22 eight year old boys. Most of them just started playing tackle football this year - the first year they are eligible. Bingham Gremlins practice 5 days a week with game day on Saturday - and that's just for the B teams. The Bingham A teams always dominate through all ages of little league football and they field a ton of B teams. Go look at the standings in the Ute Conference - Bingham and Alta are always at the top no matter the age. The Ute Conference does NOT make any exception on boundaries except for the Catholic schools. You play where you live. No exceptions. Period.

What does it all mean? It means the high schools are good because the feeder programs in the community are good. The feeder programs are good because of the number of kids wanting and willing to play and the number of parents willing to coach. Bingham is not good because they "recruit". They're good because of the fact that in a single ward in South Jordan there are 22 eight year old boys that are learning how to play tackle football in a well run youth program.

The same sort of thing happens at a lot schools in North Texas. In second grade full pads tackle football starts. By the time they hit middle school I see a lot of kids playing year around: in the fall they are playing school ball, in the winter/spring they are playing select ball, and in the summer they are playing 7-on-7 and arena ball. Just recently a couple of top 5-A programs were investigate because their HS coaching staff was spotted at 7-on-7 games "yelling in the direction of players who were competing" and, therefore, possibly violating UIL rules.

I guess I'm missing the sad part. A teacher making 50k with 100% paid health benefits, sick days, at least 2 months off in additions to holidays and personal days, and a retirement package is more like a self employed guy making at least $85k per year.

Sorry for the thread jack. Go ahead and ignore this post.

(this was from our Bryson Mckenzie discussion)

Bryson is back from his injury and playing extremely well. I chatted with Bryson's dad last week and he said that he has offers from Washington, Washington State, Idaho, and Army. Glad to see things have worked out for him.

His dad is a cool guy. Every time I tried to compliment Bryson he would change the subject and talk about how grateful he was that he had such an excellent coaching staff.

That is good to hear. I think he is very talented.

Another kid PJ Inoke who is from Spanish Fork is very talented and has the skills to play D-1 but he is not getting a ton of looks right now either. I think a lot of out of state schools look to see if BYU or Utah is recruiting a kid before they look at them.

Timpview vs Springville on Friday should be a great game.

Also I am hoping we get to see Cottonwood vs Bingham in the 5A state title game.

I see sumsion is the latest commit. In a thread on cb some are ripping his stats listed at 6'8 210 assuming he's too skinny. The guy looks about as ripped as you'd ever expect a kid that tall in high school to be. I think he has potential. I can see him as a 250 lb te or de or I can see him packing a lot of fat with muscle and as a 300 lb ol.

6'8" lber? At that height I can't really see anything other than an OL.
