Maybe his Dad's attitude w/ just a bit more restraint and awareness. Rocky was notorious for dumbass late hits, one of which set Penn St up for a TD (and probably the win) in our bowl game in Detmer's soph year.

IIRC, Rocky Biegel was a prized LB recruit as well. I don't know how the rankings worked back then, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was a top 100 overall type guy as well. He did some stupid things like the late hit you mention, but BYU, over the years, has seemed to have it's share of guys who commit the stupid personal foul. I'll take another Rocky Biegel in a heartbeat.

      • He definitely had some boneheaded plays, but I love the attitude of wanting to just crush someone all the time.

        • When anyone mentions a late hit out of bounds, automatically I envision the late hit on the sidelines during the USC game at USC. We happended to have seats right by ewth8tr and his lovely family.

Can't remember who it was, but I know he turned out to be a pretty good LB. At the time, I thought that hit could have cost us the game.

I believe you are talking about Colby Bockwoldts late hit on Leinart. He did turn in to a pretty good linebacker and is often overlooked when talking about some of the good ones. He had a decent NFL career as well.

Seems like yet another good get. Should be a good competition between him and Mangum.

And Alex Kuresa too. We're getting a nice stable of QBs going.

Wasn't that the kid who went to Stanford a couple years ago? What the deal? If he's back from a mish he won't really be competing with Magnum.

Is the intention to play him at QB still? Or did we just sign him as an ATH?

I can't remember if he enrolled at Stanford before the mission or not. Probably not and that would mean he doesn't lose a year of eligibility for the post mission transfer.

So when Brandon Doman was interviewed and said they had a "few things" in the works at the QB spot he wasn't kidding.

That is huge. He was a huge recruit. Likely the best ever prep player from the sovereign state of Idaho. DO YOU HEAR ME PEOPLE? THE SAME DAMN STATE THAT GAVE US JAKE THE SNAKE, HARMON KILLEBREW, TRENT PLAISTED'S EX-WIFE AND JASON 'PIPE MOVIN' BUCK! My long ago lost odes to Spencer Nead's moobs and buttcrack cleavage have found a home once again, leading our way to fame bitches! He was not top tier elite like Heaps out of HS, but certainly the next level of ability. I don't think he had offers from USC or Florida but he had offers from every other Pac-10 school I think. He chose Stanford out of HS but never enrolled and is likely coming to BYU as a result of the new coach not holding a scholie for him or he picked Stanford because of Harbaugh. This is really a good pickup for BYU. He is likely to be the heir apparant to Jake Heaps. This is huge. I really was concerned about how bare the cupboard was post Heaps and this makes it look a lot better. Spectacular athletic qb who can run as well as he can throw it. His older brother was Jordan Hill who signed with BYU and then went to ASU post mission.

If Heaps blows it up this year, whether or not Hill redshirts in 2012 will be a good first indicator of what is going through Jake Heaps' mind wrt going pro after his junior year.

Best pickup for BYU for this recruiting year, IMO.

He says he's going to play QB. He'll likely at leas start there.

I suspect that he'll play QB like Mike Hague played RB.

So he redshirts Jake Soph's year, then takes over for Jake as a Jr. (potentially Soph. if Jake leaves a year early). Magnum is going straight on a mish, so he redshirts one when he gets back, and then takes over after Hill.

I would hate to see that. I'm already wishing Hague would have been playing safety all along.
