Funny how you say that a new coach would have a standing order to keep O, I remember when the thing that held Crowton back was he was "forced" to keep certain LaVell assistants. Many comments about how that would only happen at BYU at the time.

He's a great recruiter, as a coach I'm not sold.

They could simply write a check. Checks are negotiable instruments and therefore considered a form of money, just not legal tender. As I am sure you would agree, a check can fit in a very small bag or pouch.

I like the idea of showing up at a coach's house unannounced and surprising them with a gigantic check and some balloons. nick Saban seems like the kind of guy that would really get a kick out of all the free balloons.

It happened at Nebraska when Tom Osborne retired and Frank Solich had to keep much of the existing staff. It worked both ways in that the existing DC remained for a couple of years which helped Solich and Nebraska but keeping basically the entire staff probably wasn't the right decision long term. In contrast, when Solich was fired, Nebraska should have retained the existing DC (Bo Pelini) but the new HC (Bill Callahan) insisted on brining in his own DC which ultimatley cost him his HC job at Nebraska.

The problem with bringing in a "big fish" to USC is that most of the time, they have the leverage to insist on making their own coaching staff decisions. I think the new coach would be wise to keep Orgeron. I'm not sold either if he can be a successful HC but he is an excellent assistant coach and is a great recruiter. Urban Meyer decided to keep Ohio St.'s interim HC on staff (that seems to have worked out but haven't followed it closely) so there is some recent precedence. If Orgeron isn't kept at USC, he'll have many name schools offering him to join their staff including Nebraska.

Orgeron has concerned himself with broader issues. He has opened practice to the news media, brought in frequent speakers — Dr. Dre addressed the team Friday night — and taken the team to movies. He recently delivered notes to band members, telling them that they were the backbone of the Trojans family. And most significant, he has not been afraid to hand out opportunities — the most prominent example being tailback Javorius Allen, a third-year sophomore, rising from the bottom of the depth chart to a starring role.“All coaches have pluses and minuses,” Orgeron said. “It’s easy to sit back and see what’s working and not working. I was supportive of Lane, but we needed to loosen up a little bit and have some fun.”

The inclusive nature of all these moves has helped restore the atmosphere of Carroll’s tenure, when buzzwords like competition and fun were embraced, leaving a team that threw its arms around big moments.

“That’s the S.C. that I wanted to come to,” said fullback Soma Vainuku, who grew up watching his cousin Rey Maualuga play for the Trojans. “What I’m experiencing now is what I watched during junior high and high school.”

Bailey reinforced his feelings by referring to the former coach who no longer gets named within the program (Lane Kiffin).
“What we did under the past head coach doesn’t matter to us,” Bailey said. “We’re 5-1 and one of the better teams in the country.”

Poor Kiffin. I don't think he will find another job for a long time.
