      • P10 Commisioner does not expect heavy SanCtions against the Trojans

        http://espn.go.com/blog/pac10/post/_...-colin-cowherd

        From his interview with Cowherd:

You've probably read plenty of comments from Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott on potential conference expansion, but if you'd like to listen to him talk about such things, he gave a good interview to ESPN's Colin Cowherd today.

Scott has mostly been on-message since he took over last summer: His chief marching orders are trying to find ways to increase conference revenue and exposure.

His most critical and immediate task is the conference's upcoming TV and media contracts, which would begin in 2012. Because the Pac-10 is looking to cash in as best it can -- the SEC and Big Ten are the gold standards -- expansion is seriously on the table for the first time in years because it potentially could make the Pac-10 more enticing for network and media partners.

As for other topics, Cowherd asked what it would mean for the conference if USC football got hammered by NCAA sanctions.

Said Scott, "I don't expect that."

That response may be more than flip.

Keep in mind that the Pac-10 is the only conference that conducts its own investigations of potential member rules violations. Therefore, the conference probably has reviewed as much testimony and documentation from the USC case as the NCAA. Scott should have a fairly significant knowledge of what is going on, though he is new to college sports and is a neophyte when it comes to NCAA rules enforcement.

USC meets with the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions will meet Feb. 19-21 in Tempe, Ariz. It will be six to eight weeks before the NCAA's verdict is made public.

          • Hearings are underway in Tempe. Hopefully someone will leak some info over the weekend.

            http://www.latimes.com/sports/colleg...,5346382.story

Interesting that both Floyd and PC will be present. Since both have maintained that they have done nothing wrong, not sure how this helps the NCAA, but who knows what they will say behind closed doors.

I think this will ultimately result in minor wristslaps for the football program (since technically there are no allegations against SC...only against Reggie's family and an agent unrelated to SC)....the hoops program already gave itself a one-year death penalty, plus fired the coach, so not sure what else they can do there.

The bigger implication is that the NCAA will now have to re-craft the rules to extend its reach to families of players.....and then I wonder what the resulting legal implications would be from such an extension of power. Does the NCAA have the authority to broaden its scope that far? It is a very murky area with potential for players and agents to abuse.

I get the feeling that SC is going to have their 05 season removed from the books.

There is a good article on it today at SI.com. One of the folks interviewed by the NCAA says that RB entered into verbal agreements with him and received about 300k worth of stuff himself while at school.

They are drawing a lot of parallel to the Fab 5 from Michigan.

The Fab 5 was a case of a booster that was closely associated with the university paying players. The booster had all sorts of access through the school.....locker rooms, road trips, courtside tickets, etc.

There is no such allegation at SC. I think that is fundamental problem for the NCAA, at least on the football side. There are no direct charges against the school.

Also, in the case of Michigan, the players in question admitted to taking the dough. Reggie and OJ deny wrongdoing. Floyd denies wrongdoing. PC has never denied anything because he has never been charged or accused of anything. Reggie has a few things that make his denial seems very unbelievable...his internship and several hearsay accounts of conversations.

I find the basketball side harder to believe. If Floyd really didn't get involved in a cash payment to OJ's associated, then why would the school submit to a death penalty? In the case of football, I think they are going to draw a line in the sand and cite to the fact that in all of this, there have been no allegations against SC or its staff, coaches, etc. This should go down to the NCAA's definition of institutional control. Is it a lack of institutional control if the parent's of a player take cash or benefits from unaffiliated parties? If the NCAA decides yes, it will have a long-reaching consequences.

At any rate, I do agree that any penalties will have greater implication on past than future. I guess we will see.

                  • Question for Ute fans that might be in the know:

SC brought in Xavier Grimble, one of if not the #1 TE in the country this year. He is a Vegas kid.

Next year, his cousin, Jalen Grimble, will be coming out of Vegas as a very highly ranked DE.

I was reading this morning that one school that Jalen is considering is Utah. Obviously, this kid would be a really nice get for any program.

My question: does anyone know the tie between Jalen Grimble and the Utes? How realistic are the Utes' chances of landing him?

Utah has taken a few Vegas kids over the last 3-4 years, so the coaches have a few ins with the HS coaches. We are probably a back up plan for him at this point.

                          • Florida/Urban offers Max Wittek, junior QB at Mater Dei.

Yesterday, Wittek is on campus at SC and Kiffin offers him.

The business of college football keeps creeping closer and closer to junior high. not sure that is a good thing.

                            • Mr. Henderson has said that his son will sign with USC this week. Good news for the Trojans.

Five-star offensive tackle Seantrel Henderson (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) will sign with USC this week, according to his father Sean Henderson. He also received his ACT scores on Friday and is now academically eligible.
