If Heaps is as amazing as so many sources have painted him to be, I don't see us being too much worse next year than we were this year. I've previously argued that other than QB, TE, and FB, we are likely to be at least as good at every position, and probably better toward the end of the year, and that there are great young athletes to fill even the 3 positions that are most problematic. It is sad that so many consider the QB to be the one indicator of experience vs rebuilding. SU likes to say that Utah was rebuilding this year, and I have to think that is only based on the QB situation.

The best thing for Heaps is that we'll be solid up front. If Unga comes back then I don't think there will be much drop off at all.

For a team that wins games based upon offense going from an all conference qb to a true freshman, even one who is likely to be great with some experience, will result in a huge dropoff in productivity - even with returning the preponderance of the supporting cast from the previous year.

I think that Hall was an anomaly with how good he was so early. I think the kid's confidence and mental grasp were beyond his years, but his physical skillset put a ceiling on his development.

I also think that if Unga returns then there is hope BYU could win 9 or 10 games, but without Unga I see 7 or 8 wins as more likely.

But I agree with your sentiment that with the number of returning players on offense there is no reason to expect an offensive meltdown similar to 2002 or 2003. There are still a good deal of returning players and some really talented kids just waiting to get their opportunity, but breaking in a new qb at the D1 level is going to take some time.

If Bronco plays a lot of the younger up and coming guys, I will be real happy with a 8-4 season to build on.

This coming year is a year I would like to see talent on the field learning how to execute. Not players who can execute learning how to be talented.

I thought Unga was the key to BYU's 2007 season, and his decision on whether to return or go pro will be the key to BYU's 2010 season. A good running back can really help a new QB.

I agree, but my assumptions since 2007 was that Harvey was gone with Hall and Pitta. If Quezada or Malosi Teo can stup up it will help break in a new qb, but if there are issues at the RB situation and/or it takes 7 games to find the next go to RB then I think BYU is ripe to finally lose a tough game to AF or SDSU.

I expect Washington to be a solid 6-7 win Pac-10 club, like Cal this year, and I think it will be a pretty big win for a BYU team that might be starting freshman at RB and QB. I don't expect BYU to beat FSU or TCU. Utah should be the favorite over the Y so one is looking at 4 tough games and if BYU slips against AF or SDSU it is a 7-5 season.
