TT was a game away from playing in the Big 12 title game and the national championship last year. That's why the likes of Washington were trying to hire him away. Leach won't be a hot commodity at the top tier programs, but will be looked at by programs a step below- like ASU.
Neuheisel put a few thousand bucks on a basketball pool. He was fired just because some administrators and profs think it's hygienic to fire a big time coach every few years on a technicality, just for the hell of it. Leach tortured a kid. Big difference.

Well, the reality of the story is trending away from "Leach tortured a kid." He told the little pain in the ass to go to the equipment shed, big effin' deal. This isn't Bridge on the River Kwai. This is the common opinion on literally every sports message board I've looked at today.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I don't know if Colorado would be a good fit. It ain't intramurals!

If an anonymous letter by some player/parent could set Hawkins off, imagine what that whining would do to Leach. I'd love to hear that soundbite.

Why don't you see what other players of Leach are saying about the firing (see companion thread).

Absolutely. Their brief flirtation with gridiron success is coming to an end.

You do know ESPN is being fed their info straight from Craig James, right? I bet the situation has gotten bad enough where ESPN is worried they will get poo flung on them, and have rushed to the James side, not realizing that just makes the average Joe Sixpack more suspicious of their part in this story.

Why is it, as the media rushes to verify each side's story, that they are finding more and more exaggeration from the James kid? Why did he need to embellish, wasn't his treatment as a concussed player bad enough? Why did he have to lie?

How long will it be before a college football player sues Urban Meyer for putting him in "the pit" while injured?

I think he meant in his soul. Leach forced him to face his demons.

I don't know what to make of the story. It doesn't look like the best thing to do to a kid, but neither does it seem like something worth firing an otherwise unusually successful coach over. There seems to be a lot more to this story than I've seen.

Either way, Coach Leach will be just fine. He'll end up somewhere. If nothing else, he's got that law degree to fall back on.

I liked this article from the Sporting News. He nails it. This wasn't about Adam James or even Little League Dad Craig. This was about TT being embarrassed last year by Leach during contract negotiations earlier this year.

The more I hear, the more I think TTU screwed this one up. There seems to be no question that Adam James is a whiner and liar. Further, there seems to be no doubt that Craig James and his wife are squarely in the middle of this. There is also no question that Leach overreacted in his discipline of James. But Leach's treatment of James doesn't seem to rise to the level of extreme mental abuse. Notwithstanding, Leach should have been subjected to discipline, but not firing.
Here in Albuquerque we lived through the Mike Locksley choking incident, a bungled UNM investigation, a 1-10 season, and guess what -Locksley gets suspended for 10 days. But Leach, whose conduct is not as egregious, gets fired.
What is really happening here is that Leach made some enemies within the Tech administration. The James got the ear of some of these people, giving them an excuse to can Leach, and they did so.
This will cost Texas Tech monetarily and their football program is now probably relegated to Baylor, Kansas State status. Leach may not get a job this year or even next, but he will be back somewhere and will rebound I suspect. A bizarre situation all the way around.
Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.

                                Leach finally speaks:

                                http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/200...ch-speaks-out/

“I want everyone to know what a privilege and pleasure it has been to teach and coach more than 400 student-athletes at Texas Tech University over the past 10 years. When I arrived at Texas Tech, the football program was on NCAA probation and the graduation rate was far below the national average. However, in the past 10 years, Tech has been to 10 straight bowl games, has the third best record in the Big 12 Conference, and has the highest graduation rate for football players of any public institution in the country.

Over the past several months, there have been individuals in the Texas Tech administration, Board of Regents and booster groups who have dealt in lies, and continue to do so. These lies have led to my firing this morning. I steadfastly refuse to deal in any lies, and am disappointed that I have not been afforded the opportunity for the truth to be known. Texas Tech’s decision to deal in lies and fabricate a story which led to my firing, includes, but is not limited by, the animosity remaining from last year’s contract negotiations. I will not tolerate such retaliatory action; additionally, we will pursue all available legal remedies.

These actions taken by Texas Tech have severely damaged my reputation and public image. In addition, Texas Tech has caused harm to not only my family, but to the entire Red Raider nation and the sport of college football.

As you know, I prefer to engage in question and answer sessions; however, in this instance my counsel has advised me to simply make a statement. There will be time to answer questions about this issue in the future, but the serious legal nature of this situation prevents me from going into further detail at this time.”
