By the way did you see the 2 sentance story in today's paper that Gary Patterson signed an extension with TCU until 2014 today. No fanfare or drama.......kind of like his program.....he has had four 11-win seasons in 6 years. He may have done the best job of any coach in the country the last 6 years. He probably makes half of what Leach does. Think what we could do with that 1 million a year in savings.
If not for a certain golfer's disease-ridden penis, this might be the most interesting sports story of the year.
I don't have much to add to the discussion about the firing, but back to your original question, CMBF, I'm especially interested in where he's headed. If I had to put money on it, I'd say he'll take a job at a mid-level BCS conference school.
But I wouldn't be shocked if he takes a job as an OC for the Detroit Lions. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz is on record as being a huge Leach admirer, saying Mike Leach is the one coach at the college level who consistently extracts more from less than any other coach (http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/20...artz-were.html) and they clearly have at least a basic professional relationship. Word is Schwartz is the first NFL head coach stats geek who wouldn't be afraid to try the kind of stuff guys like Leach have tried on offense. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Leach, who has never been fully accepted by the college coaching establishment, flip them the bird and try out a brand new venue for his ideas.
Sorry Cougar fans, but I think you're going to have to wait a little longer for Steve Young (head coach), Mike Leach (O-Coordinator), Andy Reid (O-line), Ty Detmer (QB's), Brandon Doman (Recruiting coordinator) and Chad Lewis (Fireside coordinator) to roam your sidelines!
I love the part where one guy says there's only "11 or 12 jobs better than TT."
This is non-exhaustive list of jobs are better than TT either due to tradition or a better location (in no particular order):
1. USC
2. Florida
3. Texas
4. Oklahoma
5. Nebraska
6. Michigan
7. Ohio State
8. Notre Dame
9. Florida State
10. Miami
11. aTm
12. Penn State
13. Washington
14. Alabama
15. LSU
16. Auburn
17. Tennessee
18. Georgia
19. Virginia Tech
20. UCLA
21. Oregon
22. Oklahoma State (T. Boone Pickens and the facilities)
23. Wisconsin
24. Cal
25. Stanford
26. ASU
27. Georgia Tech
28. Clemson
29. Colorado
30. West Virginia
BTW, would Whittingham, Mendenhall, Nutt, Petrino, Pinkel or the coaches from schools like Oregon State or Iowa want to coach at TT? I think this list could easily be expanded to 50-60 different schools. Who wants to get killed in the Big 12 South every year? TT is NOT a top 11-12 job, especially with what those guys want to pay.
Another thing, these emails are also damning to Leach. Leach has sheer coaching talent, but he's a pain in the ass. Lou Holtz kind of inferred as much last night (your job is to please the president, not for the president to please you). The James thing was the proverbial straw for an administration looking to get rid of him (like others have said). I think Leach's future will probably be as a coordinator at top tier programs or even in the NFL. If Crowton can land a job at a place like LSU, so can Leach.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”
I wonder if Leach would consider coming back to BYU. I like his spirit.
"If there is one thing I am, it's always right." -Ted Nugent.
"I honestly believe saying someone is a smart lawyer is damning with faint praise. The smartest people become engineers and scientists." -SU. "Yet I still see wisdom in that which Uncle Ted posts." -creek. GIVE 'EM HELL, BRIGHAM!

I just picked up Jeff Benedict's The System. It opens with a chapter on Leach. He is quite the character, to put it mildly. Definitely worth the read (I realize you're probably being TIC, but there's less than a zero-percent chance he would be hired at BYU).
