Eric Mika more than held his own against Gordon. Gordon is very similar to Blake Griffin.

Wiggins is the best prospect since Lebron. Ford called this the deepest draft in the last 30 years, he did qualify that by saying right now and on paper.

I can't wait to see Wiggins in college. I tend to underrate these highly touted HS players in my own mind - I did it with LeBron and he quickly proved me wrong - and I'm feeling the same way about Wiggins. I see a young Tracy McGrady without the shot, basically. Now Tracy McGrady was a GREAT HS player, so that's not a huge knock, but I'm just not seeing the can't miss idea with Wiggins that so many are.
      I'm like LeBron James.

That's absolute crazy talk. It isn't even the best on paper.

1996: Kobe, Iverson, Ray Allen, Camby, Abdur-Rahim, Marbury, Antoine Walker, Kerry Kittles. Marbury was more hyped than Marcus Smart is. Iverson, Camby, Allen, Abdur-Rahim were full of potential but had also proven it in college. Antoine Walker was just as hyped as Julius Randle would be this year, if not more.

2003: LeBron, Carmelo, Bosh, Wade, Darko

1984: I don't know if he's exempting '84 as being outside the 30 year window, so I guess Ford gets a pass on this one.

And when looking at past drafts, we're looking back based on what guys actually accomplished most of the time. When just trying to strictly remember what prospects were projected to become, think of even the '89 draft that had Pervis Ellison, Glen Rice, Sean Elliot, Stacey King, and Danny Ferry. 1995 had Rasheed, Joe Smith, Stackhouse, Garnett, McDyess, and Finley. '93 had Webber, Penny, and Mashburn. I wonder what the internet hype maching would be saying about some of those drafts a year in advance.

Tracy McGrady is a very attractive ceiling, especially if he would have stayed healthy.
          I'm your huckleberry.

            • AK signs with New Jersey for the mini-midlevel (3.1 million). NBA execs are pissed saying that Prokorhov and AK cut a side deal. The Spurs and a few other teams had offered him 3 for 24.

He did the same thing last year with Teletovic. They had agreed to a 3 year 15.9 million dollar deal, when they realized they had a chance at Dwight, Teletovic takes 3 for 9 instead with no questions asked.

I remember the buildup to the 1995 draft and it was regarded as quite shitty. Garnett was intriguing, but no one knew what to do with a high schooler coming out directly to the draft.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

There have been some comments about a side deal that seemed half joking, half serious. It definitely seems possible given their relationship, but the other side of it is money means exactly zero to AK. So it also seems possible that he just took less.

Saw something that suggested his $3mm dollar contract will cost the Nets $16mm after lux taxes. Man, that Prokorhov dude is playing with Monopoly money.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

What do you do about that though? I mean, if Comrade Prokorhov is doing that and giving them Russian money from some other source to foreign banks, I don't know what you do. It's certainly a competitive disadvantage to the rest of the league. AK didn't give up 10 million this year so he could play for 3, I know that much.

Look for AK's wife to get some crazy money for doing absolutely nothing in Russia. She'll show up at a party and get a $5 M appearance fee.

They may have negotiated that Mrs. AK gets a kitchen pass with the good Comrade

I don't remember the build up specifically, and I do think it was a different time when team's weren't gushing over potential as much as they do now, but rather wanted to see some production. But the projections that Smith and Wallace and Stackhouse (and Damon Stoudemire and McDyess) were getting out of college were huge. Joe Smith was the player of the year as a sophomore, only the 3rd person at that point to ever win ACC POTY as a soph (Ralph Sampson and David Thompson I think were the others), and had averaged 20 and 10 as a freshman in college. He was of course drawing comparisons to Len Bias because of the Maryland connection, but many people thought he'd be a huge star. Stack was this prototypical NBA SG with incredible athletic ability and great scoring instincts; Sheed was huge, could shoot it, and dominated on defense. And those two went after McDyess.

If the build-up leading up to that draft was downplaying how good it was, it was just because it was a different time than now. Think of those guys coming into the league now as rookies, and there is no way they wouldn't be as hyped as a draft class as the 2014 class is right now.

I actually could see him doing that. I really think the guy just doesn't give a crap about the money. Remember that whole saga where he melted down and said he'd give back the max contract and all that? LHM said that before the season AK actually went into his office and told him he'd play for less. He said he wanted to renegotiate and asked the Jazz if they'd be willing. LHM told him it wasn't allowed under the rules of the league.

I'm sure the guy wants to get paid something, but I legitimately believe the guy just isn't motivate in that regard the way other players are.

                              • Looks like the Spurs tried to get AK in a S&T that would have started him at $7mm, but the Wolves declined to help. It's likely that the only way he was going to land on a contender at a decent salary was through a S&T. If the Wolves weren't willing and he wanted to be in that type of scenario, he was probably going to be limited to one of the exceptions.

Nets bench is filling out nicely. They got Blatche on a bargain deal as well and he was very productive for them last year.
