  • I am not sure how the Spurs recover. They had this game in the bag and let it go. Too bad really. Would have been a great one for Timmy to go out on. I can see a Miami blowout in game 7 which sucks because I hate pretty much every Heat player. Battier, Birdman, Chalmers, Haslem, Bosh....I can't stand those guys.

          • The last five pages of this thread are money. Some really great comments by so many of CS.

Couple things that seem to have been overlooked here on the board and in the national media:

            1) the Spurs didn't blow this as much as the Heat took it down the stretch. Sure, the Spurs missed a couple FTs, but that's part of the game. James and Bosh each missed a FT down the stretch as well. You throw a game away by going up to the line and missing two. LBJ made a clutch three to cut the Spurs lead to two after Miami fought like hell to get the offensive rebound. Then, Manu drives the lane, Miami played great defense - Allen got a lot of the ball even if it could have been called a foul and forced a TO - again this happens in basketball - Miami got it done on the defensive end. Bosh simply wanted that last board more and Allen made a ridiculously clutch three. Again, Miami took the game.

Magic Johnson kept wondering, like Surfah above, how the Spurs recover - that may be a valid concern to a certain extent, but if there has ever been a team in NBA history that can recover from such a disappointment, it's this Spurs team. Great coaching, veteran, championship experience and as much as any team I've ever seen, they play the same game every time out. So sure makes sense to ask the question, but this team is as prepared as any team could possibly be.
            I'm like LeBron James.

If the Spurs don't recover, it will be because their old bodies are exhausted. But they won't be shell-shocked or sulk. They will move past it and be mentally prepared.

It was a nice play but an awful move to sit Parker for Splitter. The Heat had 5 players but only needed to defend 3.

I agree except for the last 4 seconds. The spurs only had the opportunity to set up a foul with too much time on the clock. And fouling in a scramble situation requires a really smart player in the perfect situation.

Pop didn't coach a great game last night IMO. I know he's working with old legs, but having both Parker and Duncan on the bench to start the 4th was a mistake. When the Heat cut the lead to 4-5 he called timeout and the same 2nd unit returned that mistake was magnified. I was shocked. I don't think it was until the Heat had gone up 2-3 that they came back in. You can't let your bench give up a 10 point lead like that. Those guys sat too long and it seems as though they got cold as they couldn't hit shit for the next 7 minutes. And with Duncan out, Bron went to the rim at will. I also didn't care for his substitutions at the end of the game to take Duncan out to go with perimeter defenders. If they were worried about defending the three he should have left Duncan on Bosh. If they want to float Bosh above the perimeter let him go. Also he rode Manu way too much. He was a turnover machine again and contributed little else. I was also disappointed that they couldn't do anything to free Green up more.

Yeah, they seemed to buy in and concede on Bosh's comments that Green would be stopped.

Ginobli has to know he's not going to get that call on the road in the last 20 seconds of the NBA finals...you have to get a better shot than that...same with Parker's final shot.

Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

I rewatched those last segments a few times. Duncan was trailing on Parker's drive and was open on the other side of the lane. Had he not pushed so far down low or pulled one of his stop on a dime moves he could have hit him wide open for a short jumper/runner. Kind of frustrating that there at the end both he and Manu got tunnel vision. Manu was definitely fouled BTW. But he also definitely traveled so it's a wash. I thought Green was fouled too. Bosh took him out with the lower body. Tough one to call but it was a foul and Green should have shot 3 FTs.

And Junkie was right. Pop was irate on the sidelines that the refs stopped to verify Ray-Ray's three pointer. He wanted the Spurs to inbound the ball and push it up as fast as they could like Parker did the other night in going coast to coast. That stoppage for instant replay benefited the Heat way more than it did the Spurs as it allowed them to set up their defense. They were celebrating the three pointer and a couple of guys were walking towards their bench anticipating a timeout but neither team had any left. I have no clue why it was reviewed, it was clearly a three pointer and the official at the top in the one replay had a clear view and signaled three as Ray was elevating.

Speaking of review, how many times in this series have the refs missed a call on a ball going out of bounds off a player? I swear it has happened every game this series. Fortunately last night, the review helped overturn the obvious missed call on the one Bron knocked out of bounds.

That out of bounds review last night looked an awful lot to me like the old "that might have been a foul, but I didn't call it, so I'll just call it out of bounds in favor of the offense to even it out" call that has been so prevalent in the NBA for the last 20 years. In full speed, it really did look like Green fouled LeBron. But with replay, that type of call isn't going to work in the last 2 minutes, because the foul call (or non-call, as it were) isn't reviewable but the possession call is. It seems like refs who have been calling games without review for the last decade or two (or four in Bavetta's case) are having a difficult time adjusting to that difference.

I responded to cj's post last night that said about the same...it just isn't true. When you let the video run for a second or two after the 3 goes in, this is what you see:

                            - LeBron and Bosh standing between the 3pt line and halfcourt, facing the Spurs, James waving his hands at his other teammates and directing them.
                            - Allen standing right by Leonard at the foul line, Chalmers standing right by Ginobili at the opposite 3 pt line, Wade right under the hoop by Green and Diaw with Diaw getting ready to throw the ball in.
                            - Parker was standing alone on the wing near where Allen had just made his shot. Allen's back was to him because he was following Kawhi.
                            - Right as the ref blew the whistle, James went running to them apparently motioning that the Spurs didn't have a TO, thinking they had called one.

No celebrating other than Wade putting his arms up under the hoop, no guys headed toward the bench, they were all pretty aware of finding someone to guard, and Bosh and James retreated quickly in anticipation of the ball coming at them. SA could've inbounded to Parker easily, but he would've been at the baseline with 5.2 to go, with both James and Bosh already at halfcourt waiting for him.

Regarding Green, I was wanting them to go to him earlier in the shot clock as a 1st option. On a quick transition, he should trail the play, and be ready to jump into a shot before the defense has him covered. He was open time and again, when Parker would dink around and run the clock down.

Bosh, Wade, and Allen were all celebrating. Bosh was preening as he was walking backwards across halfcourt, hardly getting set defensively. Bron was the only one who seemed to know what was going on and he was only where he was because he was still calling for the ball at the top of the key after Bosh got the board. Allen chased after Kawhi after Bron yelled at him. Wade too jumped on Green when he realized that Diaw wanted to inbound the ball. Chalmers was just standing there not paying Manu much attention and as you noted Parker the one guy who could get up the court in 5.2 seconds was wide open. Regardless, they were in no defensive set and there were guys wide open and mismatches that the Spurs could have exploited.
