I'm ecstatic that Garza is leaving the AL East. I don't know much about the players CHI gave up for him, but he's been a stalwart in the rotation for Tampa. Yes, he has peaks and valleys, but I hated it when he pitched against the Sox. I think the transition from AL East to NL Central could cause his numbers to looks much better in the Windy City.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

From Espn.com. Sometimes I hate being a cub fan. Matt Garza, like most cubs acquistions, will most likely end badly.
What this boils down to is that trading away upper-echelon prospects makes sense if a team acquires proven, top-notch talent that can aid its quest for postseason glory. Trading away the aforementioned farm talent for a pitcher who may become a reliable No. 2 option is a very risky proposition, since it is possible that the pitcher does not help the team accomplish its goals while the surrendered prospects develop into solid, cost-controlled contributors elsewhere.
This isn't to say that the Cubs needed to stand by and let the offseason pass without upgrading the rotation; however, the roster is constructed in an odd fashion with a group of players that do not seem to comprise a winner, yet the front office continues to create the illusion that the team is one piece away. The Brewers went all-in this offseason and have two legitimate front of the rotation starters to show for it. The Cubs tried to create the illusion of going all-in with the Garza move. There is a big difference and we'll see that on display this season."Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. Could be. I've been putting off buying MLB.TV, because I can't decide whether to get the entire year or month to month. It is $120 for the year, or $25 per month, so the yearly rate is a no brainer, but I keep wondering if I will be interested in baseball past June.Originally posted by pellegrino View Postit's going to be a long season.
On the plus(?) side, the Cubs were two Pirate hits away from sweeping the series, right?

Yes but I had a glitter of hope. They couldn't even run the pirates pitcher who didn't even make it to the 5th inning in any of his 6 spring training startsOriginally posted by pellegrino View Postit's going to be a long season.

yeah, you're right, but it's still the pirates. they shouldn't even be in the game at that point, especially at home.Originally posted by Clark Addison View PostCould be. So its June 15th and the cubs are 11 games out and have the second worst record in the national league. This is what happens when you team doesnt have a plan.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostChicago Cubs are close to a trade for Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Matt Garza - ESPN Chicago
Matt Garza??? really?? what is the plan for this team?

I gave up on them over a month ago. I'll be happy to see them play live once this year and even happier if they win, but otherwise, it's just miserable.Originally posted by Mormon Red Death View PostSo its June 15th and the cubs are 11 games out and have the second worst record in the national league. I will only see them live once this year too. In Pac Bell or whatever calling it in San Francisco these days.Originally posted by pellegrino View PostI gave up on them over a month ago. Some suggested changes to help the team.
The first one is obvious. Go After Pujols with everything you've got."Be a philosopher. A man can compromise to gain a point. It has become apparent that a man can, within limits, follow his inclinations within the arms of the Church if he does so discreetly." - The Walking Drum

It's obvious, but I don't agree with it. I am no major league scout, but I just don't see Pujols continuing with monster numbers into his late 30s. I think one of the impacts of the steroid era is that people expect players to be great until they are 38 or 40 years old. Given his body type and injury history, I think he is going to see a pretty steep decline through his early 30s. Granted, Pujols can decline quite a bit and still be a solid player, but in a couple of years I see him as a 33 year old first baseman with an .875 OPS. That's a solid player, but not worth the kind of money he will demand. Especially two years later when he is a 35 year old with an .825 or .850 OPS.
I think going after 32 year old big name free agents in the post-steroid era is very dangerous.
