    Chicago Cubs

We heard from enough Cubs fans this month to know exactly what they were hoping this deadline would bring -- an Everything Must Go closeout sale. On Alfonso Soriano and his $18 million-a-year fizzle. On Carlos Zambrano and his $17.9 million shenanigans. On Aramis Ramirez and his $14.6 million home run-or-bust act.

Heck, these people even dreamed of watching the Cubs sell off guys they actually LIKE -- a Ryan Dempster or a Carlos Pena or even a Marlon Byrd -- just to change the mix and restart the engines.

Unfortunately, that was impossible. Between no-trade clauses, contracts that acted like no-trade clauses and low-energy under-performance from so many guys on this roster, the Cubs headed for the auction stand with almost nothing they could sell, other than Kosuke Fukudome. And once Fukudome was gone, that's exactly what they did get moved:

    Nothing.

"Now that," said one scout, "is a deadline loser if I ever saw one."

On Saturday, I watched the Cubs score 5 runs in the top of the first against the Cards. I then hopped in the car to run some errands, listening to the game on XM. I ended up at the grocery store, and as I left my car to go in, the Cubs were hanging on to a 5-2 lead. I didn't think I spent that much time in the store, but when I got back the score was 12-5.

It's been that kind of year.

        • Jim Hendry is out. Apparently, he got the ax back on July 22, but stayed with the team to help sign their draft picks.

Maybe they can get someone who knows what the hell they are doing. Come on Rickett's family how about Billy Beane?

Beane has an equity stake in the Oakland A's, he isn't going anywhere. If you want a change of pace, I suggest going with a guy like Paul DePodesta or J.P. Ricciardi.

                  • The new GM will overpay for Albert next year trying to make a splash. How can a team fail to win a championship for over a hundred years, even the Marlins fell into a couple of them.

                    • Wow another article about bad cubs signings. I love the part where he says they just need to be patient. That is how the cubs are supposed to resurge by being patient (damn I hate this organization). What they should do is trade zambrano & soriano (offer to pay half of Z's salary and one full year of Sorianos). Its a sunk cost with both of them. Even if you are getting a utility outfielder and couple of A-ball pitchers that drain on the team is gone.

Then have the general manager do an analysis to find what hitters do well at wrigley field and go after them or even over pay. Wrigley is different and plays to a certain kind of hitter (like sosa and carlos lee).

                      • Rumors on the [ame="http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=olney_buster&id=6890937"]MLB - Chicago Cubs could target Theo Epstein - ESPN[/ame]:

Brian Cashman, the Yankees' general manager, could be a candidate, as could Tampa Bay Rays GM Andrew Friedman, who might be in position to escape the shadow of the AL monsters. Oakland's ballpark situation is buried deep in a sea of baseball machinations, and A's GM Billy Beane could be at a crossroads in his career, looking for a better chance to win. Pat Gillick, a Hall of Famer as a GM, has mused about the Cubs' job publicly.

And here's another big name to keep in mind: Theo Epstein, the general manager of the Red Sox.

                            here is your answer:

In years past, some friends say, Epstein has talked about the Cubs' organization as a place with extraordinary growth potential and as a unique challenge. When Epstein took over the Red Sox, Boston had had more than eight decades of frustration before it finally won the World Series in 2004.

Keep in mind that Epstein has carved out a strong position under Red Sox owners Henry and Tom Werner, and friends say he has a deep loyalty to the Boston organization -- and keep in mind that Boston is his hometown and that Epstein is in the middle of his current contract.

But that would not preclude the Cubs from calling the Red Sox and asking whether they could talk to Epstein, presumably with the potential offer of some kind of promotion, such as a club presidency with oversight of baseball operations. There's no telling how Henry would react or how Ricketts would handle that situation or what Epstein would want until those conversations take place.

Reports are that Epstein is close to taking the job. That would be a great hire for the Cubs.

EDIT: Wow, this was a slow thread. 25 posts during the entire season: 5 of them during the first week of the season and 3 near the end of the season because of a guy who isn't even a player or in the same league. Maybe this is the jumpstart our Chicago contingent needs.
