I can't defend the failure of TexTechCoug to know the Fredette-Andre Miller CUF meme.

Now obviously it's unlikely that Jimmer really is as good as those guys or will be as good a pro as Andre Miller, but if I'm a coach I would keep giving Jimmer minutes until his efficiency falls. Smart is a baseball manager benching a guy hitting .340 to keep play guys hitting .250. Maybe Jimmer is also a .250 hitter, but damn why not keep him out there until he start playing worse than he has so far this season?

The baseball analogy is a fail for a variety of reasons, but maybe Jimmer's efficiency (both in terms of PER and scoring rate) are an indication that Smart has found something of an ideal role for him?

Jimmer's scoring wasn't a problem last year, but his ability as a point guard and defender were. Here's a sample of comments from his scouting report for year 1.

+ Phenomenally bad defensive player. Lacks length, agility to defend one-on-one.

He was beyond hopeless on defense and needs to show dramatic improvement to stay in the rotation. New Orleans posted up Greivis Vasquez against him, for crying out loud, and nearly every other opponent immediately attacked Fredette as soon as he checked in. Opposing point guards had a 17.9 PER against him and Synergy rated him well below average, but even those numbers shortchange how flammable he was; he simply can't guard anybody in individual defense.

Offensively, he had some issues too. While he scored at a decent clip (16.3 points per 40 minutes), he struggled at the point, especially dribbling against pressure, and had the lowest assist ratio of any point guard.

Does he look any better in these areas? because it's never been his scoring that keeps him from bigger minutes. A quick glance at the numbers says no. The Kings are again a better defensive unit with him off the floor, and individual opponents are blistering him even more than they did last year (opponent PER of +19).

And he also doesn't seem to have improved upon his PG metrics. After posting one of the lowest assist ratios in the league last year, his numbers there are actually worse this year (16.8 to 16.1). Additionally, he struggled with ball pressure last year, but his turnover ratio is even higher this year (10.4 to 12.0).

I suppose you could say his benefits are outweighing the negatives, as he has the highest simple rating on the team right now. But it could just as well be that Smart is finding the best spots to maximize his scoring ability before his deficiencies end up costing overall. Who knows. Of course I'd love to see him play more, but for the most part BYU have always been out of touch regarding Jimmer's abilities. And the notion that some seem to have that Smart is intentionally trying to sabotage him is always funny.

Watching the games this year you don't get the sense that Jimmer is a huge defensive liability, but I hadn't seen those defensive stats. But it's not like Aaron Brooks and Isaiah Thomas are Gary-Paytonesque on defense.

Yeah I saw those Hollinger scouting report comments and they are pretty damning. I've had some of those same thoughts that maybe all Jimmer can do in the NBA is come in for a few minutes with the second unit for a little bit of instant offense. We'll see, but sure it's stupid the way some BYUers act like Smart is biased against Jimmer because of race or some other reason.

Been watching some of the Sacramento-Phoenix game tonight. Jimmer has 20 points in 22 minutes (with 2 minutes left in the game). I was skeptical if he could make it in the league, but this season it seems he has figured it out a bit.

Obviously, no one is saying Jimmer will be like those guys if he gets playing time. But if he were to get 24 minutes a game, is it a stretch to think he goes 12 PPG, 5 assists, shoots 40%+ from 3, and 50% from the floor?

I think he could get close to 2 of the 4. Given his average of a measly 3.6 assists p/40 (3.8 his rookie season), I would say yes, it's a stretch to think he could average 5 a game in 24 minutes (that's would be more than doubling his assist rate from his first two years -- doesn't seem likely). I also don't think he could get the 50% fg's. There are usually maybe just a couple points that get that per year, and you're talking about either (a) one of the greatest shooters in NBA history (Nash) or guys who excel at getting a lot of shots around the hoop and finishing at a high clip (Rondo, Parker). Jimmer isn't either of those (so far this year he's finishing just 44% of his shots in the immediate basket area and only getting off 11% of his shots there -- by contrast, guys like Rondo and Parker are taking +30% of their shots there and hitting +60%).

12 points in 24 minutes is a scoring rate of 20 p/40. I think he could get somewhere in the ballpark of that playing 24 a night, and I also think he could get the 40% from 3 (in fact, out of all of them, this is the most reasonable for him to reach).
