The team is probably already playing Jefferson too much, which brings us back to Corbin. Here's a remarkable thing: Utah's five most-used lineups this season have been outscored. Ditto for 17 of its 18 most commonly used three-man groups, and usually by margins much larger than Utah's overall negative scoring margin.

Only two of the 80 teams that have qualified for the playoffs in the last five years have done so with their top five lineups being outscored: the 2008-09 Bulls, and … last year's Jazz. This is very strong evidence that Corbin is basically just playing the wrong guys and wrong combinations in the wrong minutes distribution. His better defenders and all-around guys — Favors, Kanter, DeMarre Carroll, Gordon Hayward, et al. — deserve a larger chunk of the time going to Jefferson, Mo Williams (now back from injury), and others. Lineup data can be pretty noisy over short sample sizes, but the noise is getting really loud at this point.
Nice write up at Grantland. Jazz with lots of choices, they are probably making a lot of wrong choices right now, and Corbin is a bad coach.

I don't see how anyone can argue contrary to these points.

Just finished it. Great article, though I didn't have the same takeaway on your middle point. All the wrong choices they pointed to are coming from your last point (Corbin's minutes distribution, defensive lapses). Of course you could say they're making a wrong choice by keeping Corbin employed, but I don't think firing him is worth it at this point. Lindsey said they'd reevaluate at the end of the season, and that comment seemed a bit ominous (I'd take either of the Van Gundy's ). Guess we'll see what happens. Regarding the Jazz (in terms of the FO office sans the decision to keep Ty) choices, I think the article catches a lot of their vision in terms of why they didn't make a move, etc. given what was out there and actually makes the case that despite a lot of the bitching that went on, they actually could be making the right moves.

Oops, meant to include the link to the article.

I agree that the part about making wrong choices mostly boils down to the last point of Corbin being bad. After reading the article I ended up thinking more of Corbin's horrible strategic decisions, but then was thinking of the playing time distribution blame being spread out among Corbin and the front office. But that really falls more at the feet of Corbin too. Not running more of the offense through Hayward, not cutting minutes for vets who aren't producing and/or can't play defense, and as the article said not using the more versatile players for more minutes do reflect more on Corbin, his lack of clout with the roster currently, and his poor coaching.

I think it's time for the Jazz to cut ties to the Sloan era altogether. Personally I'd like to see a coach that believes in not fouling and actively defending the 3-pt line.

Kanter is up to 77% at the line on the season. Favors is having his best year at 70%.

But since the all-star break, Enes is 84% at the line and Favors is 82%.

              Post all-star numbers

              Kanter - 21 mpg, 12 ppg, 7 rpg, 60% FG
              Favors - 25 mpg, 10 ppg, 9 rpg, 2.2 bpg

As of this morning Kanter has passed Favors in PER (17.96 to 17.81), which is kind of crazy because there was a huge gap between them earlier in the year. Derrick has spent most of his time in the high 17s/low 18, but Kanter was around 10 for a good while. I'd love to be able to see some PER splits for him.

I don't think Favors could consistently stay at 80% from the line, but I think Kanter definitely can. It'd be huge if Kanter was at 80+ and Favors at least at 75 with the solid FTA rates they have.

I thought it was a bad idea to "promote from within" when Sloan took his ball and went home.

But, at the time of year when he did that, we were kind of painted in to the corner. I didn't think Corbin was ready and I'd have preferred if he finished out the year and then we do a real coaching search.

The Jazz need to bring someone in with some fresh ideas who hasn't been involved with the organization years on end. I would love if one of the Van Gundy's would come.

That's where I am at. I'm tired of teams raining 3 pointers on us while we pack the middle against Fabricio Oberto.

Am I wrong for still thinking Calderon would be a great fit on this team? I'd love to have that guy as the starting PG for the Jazz next season. More than anything this team needs shooters and he's a career 48/40/87 shooter. He takes care of the ball well, and he seems to transition between primary ball handler and playing off the ball in certain sets than most PGs, which would work well on a team that has Hayward and Burks. My guess is he ends up with a good team like Miami or Indiana for the midlevel, but I don't think he'll necessarily get many offers far above that or for a long contract. So he could be a target for Utah where he gets a contract well above the midlevel but not to a point that it hurts Utah much going forward.

Give me an off-season of signing Calderon, drafting Burke or Kabongo with Utah's own pick, getting Tony Mitchell with the GS pick, and bringing back Fesenko and I'd be a happy man.

Your memory sucks. Fabricio Oberto destroyed the Jazz that in the WC finals in 07. Dude averaged 4 points that year, 5 points in the playoffs, and 10.2 against the Jazz that series.

"We're in the fight," Corbin said Tuesday. "It's 18 games left in the season; we've got a chance to move up in the playoff picture, and if we take care of our business, we'll be just fine.

"There's no time to panic, there's teams making runs. We didn't play our best basketball on the last road trip, but we're still in the fight. That's the most important thing.

"It's frustrating to lose," he said. "It was four tough losses for us, and it was at a bad time for us. At this time of year to lose four in a row is difficult, but you know what? You learn from it and you move on."
                                Heh.

Edit: I know editors often choose the titles of articles but I thought that too was funny. If the Jazz were a critical patient, they would have pulled the plug months ago.
