  • A large portion of Tuesday’s opening practice was dedicated to defensive transition, getting back and guarding against opponent fast breaks.

That was emphasized when Snyder yelled at his team, "I don’t care if we get an offensive rebound all season."

    Spurs style.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

    • Just looking at the last two years, seems a real mixed bag between offensive rebound rates and transition points given up. As would be expected, there is a far stronger correlation between turnovers and giving up transition points. Several teams were really good at getting offensive rebounds and still limiting easy buckets for the other team. Given the high point probability off of offensive rebounds I hope the team doesn't have to quite go full Charlotte Bobcat to improve their defense significantly.

Asked who's caught his eye so far in camp, Gordon Hayward mentioned Alec Burks, Rudy Gobert and Trevor Booker.

Alec Burks on Jazz 'O': "I feel like Quin plays my style. He wants to play with pace, open space. I do that for a lving. I love to do that."

Quin: "The biggest thing I’ve asked them is to be unselfish, to have obvious unselfishness, have it resonate when people watch us practice."

        • There were quotes like the Burkes quote from Kanter as well. Not buying it as anything other than the banter you hear every time there is a new coach in any sporting context.

Kanter's talk about how confident Snyder makes him feel reminds me of Thurl's consistent comments from last year that Kanter's biggest issue is confidence. Thurl harped on that all year long, saying how fragile Kanter appeared to be, and that it just wasn't working between him and Corbin. He said he'd seen incredible stuff from Kanter in practice but it wasn't translating to games enough because of how afraid he was to make mistakes.

I thought Kanter's confidence talk and Hayward's quote about being able to trust that Snyder knows basketball were the most telling sound bites out of media day.

            • I never think any of this stuff is telling. Been around too many coaching hires at this point, I guess.

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Utah Jazz are signing a 5-year-old free agent guard to a one-day contract for a special scrimmage on Monday night.

JP Gibson, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, plans to sign his contract with Jazz president Randy Rigby before joining the team in uniform for the annual preseason intrasquad scrimmage at EnergySolutions Arena.
Nice gesture by the Jazz. Also, Exum can get some playing time where he can build up his confidence again. It is even better than when he was[n't] dominating high school players.

                • Dahntay one of the first 10 out for the scrimmage. This season is officially a failure.

Meh. I was just thinking earlier today that I haven't been less excited for a Jazz season in years. All the mystery is out of this group and I don't think they're up to much.
