  • I’ll be shocked if any of those BYU athletes medal. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but none of them are even expected to challenge for the podium. Out of all of them, I think Wayment has the best chance, but it’s a slim one. Maybe Rooks if he just goes crazy. But in the distance events there just too many Kenyan/ethiopian athletes that are better. I’m definitely rooting for all of them.

    • How about Kristen Faulkner. Holy crap. I saw that she took gold while I was in Sunday school and I just about let out an audible gasp. I watched the replay of the last 15kms and it was incredible.

That was unreal. So much fun to watch.

Agreed that medals are unlikely, but Morgan and Wayment getting to their finals was a good accomplishment and they both ran very solid, smart races to get there. I think at least one of the men get to the steeplechase final also, more likely Rooks.

                • Solid race by Rooks. Perfectly timed his move to assure a spot in the next round (unlike the Kiwi guy who waited a bit too long)

Combine that with coaching, regular access to pole vault equipment and facilities as well as athletic ability and I just didn't stand a chance.

Same brother. Except minus the junk issue.

                          • It's interesting how the heats work - the fastest runners don't always make the finals. Rooks' heat, the third of the day, was the slowest of the three by a wide margin. The other American, Wilkinson, ran 8:16:82 in heat 2, a full 8 seconds faster than Rooks, but it was only 6th best in his heat so he's out.

Bronze medal times from the last 3 Olympics:

                            2020: 8:11:45
                            2016: 8:11:52
                            2012: 8:19:73

Rook's PR time, which he set back in May, is 8:15:08 so he's capable of getting on the medal podium but it would require the race of his life as at least 6 of the finalists have run faster times this year. I hope he has the race of his life!

                            • American women just getting torched in the 5000m final, as expected. The jostling and the in-race bickering between the Kenyans and the Ethopians was fun to watch. Props to the Italian lady who nearly snagged a medal.

                              • So, does screaming at the discus or shot or hammer after you've launched it actually make it go further? I like the practices; kind of primal.
