Could I get an irony ruling? Someone doubling down on a GM post, and it’s not the Red Sox fan. Go figureOriginally posted by Non Sequitur View Post
She was a great blocker but pretty one-dimensional. She relied mostly on her size. She's much more athletic now and a much better all-around player.

My understanding is that there has been zero corroboration by other Duke players/staff, including the other players on the court with her, by the police/security person the school immediately placed in the area, by the multiple ROC leaders who fanned out through the area, or by the video review staff that scoured footage of the time and place of the alleged incident.Originally posted by PaloAltoCougar View Post
I haven't followed the story carefully, having learned early on to avoid the discussion on CB, but has anyone else (notably other Duke players) stated they also heard the racial epithets or the threat by the "fan" who followed her after the match? I don't think the Duke player is lying, but I also think it's possible she misunderstood, not unreasonably given the volume of the student section and a justifiable tendency to perceive harm."What are you prepared to do?" - Jimmy Malone

Also nothing from the Duke athletic department official placed right next to the BYU cop during the last two sets.Originally posted by Joe Public View Post

I'm usually pretty progressive when it comes to cultural/race issues, but this one I can't get behind. When it first was reported, I was incredibly disappointed and had no reason not to believe her exact account. Obviously, at this point it really seems like, at best, she misheard something.
Now I find myself disappointed whenever BYU is attacked over the incident. Sigh. People are gonna believe what they believe in spite of evidence or lack thereof. Oh well.

She didn't have the Eschenberg's hops, but I'm fairly certain she was the ACVA (or whatever the name of the entity is) Newcomer of the Year.Originally posted by Non Sequitur View Post

Kills by year for Fr., So., Jr. years (progressive): 225, 226, 227
Digs: 36, 54 ,67
Aces: 31, 26, 30
Blocks (BS and BA, cumulative): 159 (7 solo); 138 (12 Solo); 106 (16 solo).
To your point, I think she's better this year than last in a few key respects:serving and backrow defense on her serve). She's also on pace for 246 kills (in addition to her improved athleticism, I think that the uptick in production is fill the void left by Koerber and Mrs. MVP).
So this may be a situation of "we're both right," in that she looks better than in years past, but that she was productive offensively from the get-go.Jesus wants me for a sunbeam.

BYU releases a statement with their official findings. This is a tough situation for BYU. They found absolutely no evidence that racial slurs or heckling occurred. They have to state that in their findings, but have to be careful specifically accusing RR of anything. They can't say she outright made it up. They can't accuse her of mishearing. All they can do is make a blanket generalized statement against racism and stating that they have zero tolerance for such.
Will this mean anything? It's obvious that those that already believe it 100% happened and have biases against BYU already will believe it's some sort of coverup from the institution. Will the ESPN talking heads address the issue? Will they still stand behind RR? Will Dawn Staley care (LOL)?

Pretty good statement. Had I written it, I might have put something in there to the effect of "regardless of the findings, we are using this opportunity to evaluate and improve our procedures and educate the fans and public at large."
I'm also hoping they improve security around visiting teams, so that you don't have the situation where random fans are approaching them.

So far the twitter reaction is exactly what I expected
"BYU is vindicated and Stephen A Smith should be fired and RR arrested!"
"BYU is evil and horrible and of course they would clear themselves of any wrong doing because they are evil and horrible!"
In other words, nothing changed. As predicted.

Duke's official statement is to double down and side with RR. It's a tough position for them too

Prediction: Someone who hates BYU/the church is now going to dress as a BYU fan, go to the games, and yell racial slurs.Prepare to put mustard on those words, for you will soon be consuming them, along with this slice of humble pie that comes direct from the oven of shame set at gas mark “egg on your face”! -- Moss
There's three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who's got the same first name as a city; and never go near a lady's got a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese. --Coach Finstock

people are dumb so anything is possible, but I doubt anyone could get away with that right now at BYU. I almost hope somebody tries that because the whole world would come down on them.Originally posted by Donuthole View PostPrediction: Someone who hates BYU/the church is now going to dress as a BYU fan, go to the games, and yell racial slurs.Dyslexics are teople poo...

Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."
