Second, the notion that after playing AAU/HS ball and then two years of college, someone has hit a ceiling and has no more room or opportunity to improve is also crazy talk. There are NBA players with far more experience than him that continue to steadily improve each year.

Emery may or may not get better in his last two years. I am betting he will improve. But if he doesn't, it won't have anything to do with this mythical experience limit you are describing.
I suppose it's called a sophomore slump for a reason.

If Emery averages 15ppg for his career, who is complaining, right? I do think we have a good idea of what his upside is, though, and it's probably limited.

    • This whole team is suffering from game time panic. Nothing more. They will get a ton of benefit from playing and having confidence.

      • I went to the practice facility banquet tonight. What an amazing accomplishment for Coach Rose and Coach Judkins. Great to see the players. Yoeli not likely to play Thursday.

Yeah, barely walking. Rehabbing like crazy though. He's a tough kid but it looks bad.

I realize the chances of a win Saturday are in the snowball/acetylene torch range, but I can imagine the team starting out strong, hitting some shots, and playing Gonzaga very close. Perhaps more than any other game thus far, winning or losing this game will make no difference for the conference tournament and postseason. I'd love to see them come out loose and have some fun.

                Yeah, and win.
                Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

                  • Emery would be great if we asked him to play a similar role as Jackson. Hit the open three and play great defense. He should be a 4th option and spot up shooter. He is either asked or decides himself to do to much on this team. When he takes good shots in rhythm he is great. When he tries to put the ball on the floor, shoot off the bounce, and do to much, he doesn't help us. I do believe he has a great skill set that can help this team.

He was just hurt. It affected his jumper, and he couldn't change directions or shift gears to make space for a layup/floater.

I can't remember if it was here or on a talk show, but someone postulated that he's never going to fully recover from his knee injury (I think it was Criddle).

Emery was starting as a 9th grader for Lone Peak. He's started two full years in college now. He entered college as a very experienced, highly polished player. The kind of guys that are making dramatic improvement at this point in their career are the guys who have always relied on athleticism and are improving their shot and handles. I just don't see Emery getting significantly better than he is now. Which is not bad at all.

I actually sort of agree with you. Unless Emery gets smarter and makes better decisions, I think he is at his ceiling.

I think TJ will get better once he realizes the moves he pulled off in high school won't work in college. When you drive to the rim, you need to do so with a purpose and not look to get bailed out or get stuck in the lane and pull some okey doke on the defender.

If Eric continues to improve with that jumper, and work on his defense. He will have a legit chance to be an AA his senior year.

YO does have the most upside. He is a quick jumper, he's long, and athletic. He needs a lot of work on his jumper, the last few games it has looked decent. He is a 10 and 9 guy right now just by being active around the basket. That is pretty amazing.

                          • I've tried to mostly ignore byu basketball this year in an attempt to not let this team bother me too much, but this Childs injury makes me sad, dammit.

Agreed. It seemed like he was starting to hit his stride.

I am glad it was just an ankle injury. When I saw him go down I thought it was his knee. Still it will be a month before I am guessing he is close to back to normal.
