  • Just read this on CB.

and they are not playing disciplined basketball and have schemes that are both highly predictable and ineffective. That is on the coaching staff. Both the offensive and defensive schemes are a fail this year.

Offense: Pass around the perimeter and either toss up an unassisted and contested shot or toss the entry pass to the big men for a double team and low percentage shot. Very few screens and no collective effort to create spacing for an uncontested shot. That will get you 40% from the field with 28% from 3 range while St Mary's shoots 50% on our home floor all with a plethora of open drive and 3 point shots.

Defense: Play off your man 3 feet (15 feet on the wings), keep your hands down, be really slow to switch or not switch on screens, and then let the offense quickly drive or pass for an open shot.

There were also long stretches where the player rotations left little offensive firepower in the game.

This is 90% system (coaches) and 10% players, with players simply playing like they are directed to in practice.

With Rose relying heavily on his short-leashed coaching staff, it is time for a major overall. If the current schemes continue into next year then there will be only marginal improvement with our above average talent. What a waste!

This is a horribly uninformed opinion. Does he really think our coaches are telling the players to play poorly? What a moron. When it comes to predictable offense, St Mary's is more predictable than ours. There are fewer wrinkles and on the fly adjustments by players but they make the decisions they are supposed to make in a quick and correct manner. To quote Dave, "we shoot when we should pass and pass when we should shoot." It isn't scheme. It is lack of basketball.

I also love how he comments on the "short leashed" coaching staff. Truthfully, as someone who has been in practice, Rose lets his coaches run their stuff and he provides input. For example, he was always a no zone guy but different coaches have effectively used a 2-3 and later a 1-3-1 under him. He loves innovation and team hoop. This team is driving him crazy because they have potential but their struggling to consistently execute.

People who don't go to practice shouldn't comment on the coaching, they just don't know. I forgot how much I hat CB. That place is a cesspool of uninformed computer nerds talking about stuff and people they don't know anything about.

I'm just unhappy that we lose games I don't think we should lose. But I generally agree with your points on playing right after a mission. I haven't watched a lot this year, but last evening I saw poor shot selection (so many contested three-pointers off the dribble), mishandling the ball, and inability to finish at the basket. Also, St. Mary's had so many open three pt shot attempts. I hope and expect TJ will get a lot better at driving and finishing at the basket, as well as hitting from beyond the arc.
      Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

I think he shoots fine but needs better decision making. I don't think 39% from 3 is bad.

Like said, I was referring to last night's game. Too many contested shots from beyond the arc (neither TJ nor Emery were hitting those). I expect the decision making to get better with more experience at this level.

          • My only thought on the game is that we should not run the 1-3-1 defense if the opposing team can hit threes from the corners. Our wing defenders get sucked up top, and the offense has a wide open shot.

              Gotcha. I agree with that.

              • I agree with KD. Fan expectations (my own included) were way out of wack for this season. If we have the same troubles next season the criticism might be valid. It has been a disappointing year, and it did hurt a lot that Kyle Davis (who was my favorite whipping boy) is out for the season. It also hurt that LJ Rose played quite poorly. But being a fan of BYU means that you have to be excited because we get talent that we probably would not otherwise get, but that talent is hampered by missions.

Mika does not have an NBA game. He's athletic for a white guy, but he doesn't have elite athleticism, and he doesn't play above the rim and he's not a rim protector. He'll stay because he doesn't another option.

                  • I can't believe I just read this. What is wrong with those people? This guy's so clueless he thinks his ward team could get 20 wins in the WCC. WHAT A JOKE! This is like that idiot who thought he could shut Jimmer down.

"I could coach BYU to 20 wins every year.
This isn't a fire Rose post at all. It's just a fact that we have above average talent, especially for the western U.S....we have an easy non-con sched, so we start at 10-2 in an average year, 9-4 this year which was a horrendous non-con. record.

There are 18 league games...my ward ball team could get to 11 wins in the WCC. That's 7 losses - 4 GU and SMC sweep, and still allows for 3 other trip ups, which is exactly what we have this year.

Any coach that can fog a mirror gets 20 wins a year at BYU....epciially in this league...maybe not in the old WAC or MWC, but in the WCC....definitely."

                        Ahem...double down coming.

A 6' 10" 4/5 that rebounds out of his area and consistently hits the midrange jumper and has a motor and attitude to rival anyone else on the court. You guys are right. That doesn't translate.

                        • Mika is a poor man's Tyler Hansborough, who is a minor NBA bust. If Mika can improve his shot and get a lot stronger without sacrificing his explosiveness, I like his chances in the league.

He needs to extend his range and he doesn't have NBA athleticism. After next year, it is do or die for him.

                            • BYU is currently at 86 in the RPI with no wins against the RPI top 50. If they were to pull off two wins this week, it would only push them up to about 71 in the RPI with a 1-5 record against the RPI top 50 and several bad losses.

With no real chance at an at-large bid, the only way to get to the NCAA tournament is through an unlikely conference tournament championship. They've demonstrated little ability to beat either of the top two seeds, so they'll likely need some divine intervention to achieve that goal.

In recent seasons, the runs to the NIT final four have offered some consolation to missing the NCAAs. I'm feeling that even a win or two in the NIT may be expecting too much of this team.

We should just close our eyes for the inevitable string of losses to come. This season will mercifully be put out of its misery for BYU in the very near future.
