Yoeli Childs had 5 fouls in 9 minutes of play and 2 rebounds.
Rose said it last spring. Yoeli can play wing if he can learn to defend. Same with post.

The defense struggled. I am not sure what to take from it as I never expect BYU to defend real well, it was a scrimmage with very little emotion, the two guys who I think will be the best perimeter defenders were not playing and I never know what it is Rose is emphasizing. Saying that from his comments at halftime I took away that he was not impressed. I tend to believe in time this group will defend as well as the better defensive teams during Rose's tenure if they get all the pieces together and healthy.

It is a real fun perspective as a fan right now. With the much ballyhooed arrival of the highly sought recruits we are teeming with optimism and I notice when I am watching I am looking for reasons to have my optimism bolstered. My guess is once I get comfortable with what these kids are bringing I will probably start skipping the watching of the exhibitions. But for now I am dying to watch the Ginger Mamba crossover, Erik Mika alley-oops and Yoeli Childs complete a play without fouling. This type of preseason excitement for new recruits is not statistically likely to happen very often so I am soaking it up.

Over on Cougarboard some folks are claiming that a redshirt for Dastrup might be in the cards. I like this development if true. His physical limitations will make this year a waste in so many ways. I know he is old and thinks he is going to one day play in the NBA, but I think he will do the program much more good as a RS Senior than he will as a true freshman. Further, it gives a 2 year gap between Mika and him. It also takes away some transfer security if his redshirt year is not available. I really think if Payton can develop into the player I believe I have seen glimpses of, note my admitted obvious homeristic optimism as this time, he could have two years to be the man after Mika moves on especially as a senior where he can be the bridge from the Ginger Mamba/Yoeli years to the Baxter/Harding/Seljaas team.

I also am beginning to believe Mika is the most likely to develop into a superstar of the current crop. Great athlete but not yet a great basketball player but the fundamentals and footwork and offensive moves are developing. He just needs experience and polishing and to develop a reliable jumper out to 15 feet which I think he is working on and it appears to me he has the confidence to keep trying to get there. I get the feeling he and the staff expect he will get there. This year will be disjointed but I think as a junior and senior he will be really good - perhaps national level good.

Just think, if Connor Toolson had walked on or signed with BYU, there could have been 5 Lone Peak guys on the floor at the same time.

Davis, Mika and Childs all seem super foul prone. I hope Kaufusi does play and Aytes stays healthy because we will need big bodies. For this reason I wonder if Dastrup will redshirt.

We need a lot of bodies with the foul proneness of the players. Of course, there was not any real rotation with two projected starters out with injuries.

          • not really that bad for an exhibition. The offense will be good. I think the defense will get better and that most of the issues were not due to effort, but rather mistakes of being in the wrong position and not reacting correctly. Quincy doesn't get enough credit for helping them improve the D from being ranked in the 130s in 2015 to 68th last year. Bryant and Rose being in the lineup will probably help.

            • I would just like to see someone care about defense. Maybe a coach benching someone or yelling someone's ear off for shitty D. It's not very awesome to watch a guy with no scholly offers from a D1 school blow by our high D1 recruit on the perimeter, most of the rest of the team is oblivious, one guy gives half assed help, no one helps the helper, D2 all star dishes to his D2 big man for an easy layup. I just don't know why we have crap like this happening.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited about this team. I just don't get our defensive effort.

so it's just assumed the defense will get better in real games against better competition?

                  • In the years BYU played its worst defense and was statistically quite shitty their defense was better than that exhibition. So yes, I am going to assume it will be much better in real games. I think the players will try harder. I think the team will spend on a defensive game plan tailored for that particular opponent. I also think that key players will be healthy and playing.

But mostly I just wanted to quote the Answer.

                    • Dastrup is still coming on quickly. That kid has a skill set that is impressive. His passing will let us play him at the 4 on offense. He and Mika can definitely be on the court together. Mika can defend the quicker of our opponents bigs.

                        • Yoeli looks much much better tonight. His rebound to foul ratio is good. He could end up with a double double.

                            • The most physical talent I have ever seen for a basketball team. Players have skills.

Princeton comes very early and experienced. That might be difficult to overcome but being at home.

                              Did the Popoola sign today?

                              • just haven't seen it with Dastrup at this point. not really sure what he does well. Had a couple bunnys about 4 feet from the rim against 6'5" dudes and it isn't just that they missed, it's that he looked awkward making his moves and the little hooks he threw up looked ugly and never had a chance. Honestly, Shaw looks better right now and appears to have more potential. I'm probably wrong and it's early, but that's how i'm seeing it as of tonight.
