  • I think Haws will be the best player on the team. So good.

There is more talent on this team than I can remember unless we go back to Ainge's junior and senior years.

Mika, Dastrup, Shaw, Kaufusi, Childs, Aytes and Davis are all good to serviceable. Lots of fouls to spread around.

Haws, Emery, Bryant, Rose will provide a lot of happy moments.

Honestly, Shaw looks better right now and appears to have more potential. I'm probably wrong and it's early, but that's how i'm seeing it as of tonight.
        Agreed on Dastrup.

        Other random thoughts:

Rose was serviceable tonight. Had some nice passes. He doesn't look to shoot first.
Bryant didn't look very good, threw up some bricks, got stuffed a few times, turnovers, a charge. He's athletic but tonight he just wasn't in sync.
Childs looked a lot better although he still looks to dunk too often rather than shoot a little jumper. That putback was sweet.
Mika went to the locker room with some kind of finger injury but came back. Should be fine.

I like this team. I think they'll struggle against Princeton though but I'm looking forward to the game.

        • I don't know if it was meaningful, but Childs started the second half. I think he's going to replace Davis in the starting lineup early in the season. I really am sad Kaufusi didn't stick with basketball. I think a better rotation would be for Kaufusi to be getting 20 minutes a game backing up Mika and occasionally with both playing together. And then Davis backing up Childs. We're soft in the middle when Davis comes in to play back up 5. Davis is adequate, but he's just not good enough to be playing a big role on a good team. He's too small/weak to play the 5 and too slow and not skilled with the ball 15 ft from the rim to be good at the 4.

I also want to complain yet again about our D. Lazy hedging on ball screens. Guys getting to the rim from the perimeter. Ugh. Haws didn't get down in a proper defensive position a single time during this game. You can't play defense walking around standing straight up. Lazy. So disappointing to see the lack of effort and attention. This team is so talented and has so much potential, but we're not going to go as far as we want without playing defense.

I had similar thoughts about the defense last night and in past games/scrimmages. It's almost shocking at times how this team doesn't move their feet defensively and consequently how often they can't/don't stay in front. It's as if individually, they don't take any pride in shutting down their guy. some guy named matt nelson(?) on BYU-H shouldn't be getting to the rim virtually any time he wants to. it's kind of embarrassing to watch. I wish the coaches would emphasize this in such a way that when a guy gets blown by off the dribble, he's immediately pulled - regardless of who it is.

Both BYU-H and Seattle Pacific got way too many open looks and/or FTs because guys are getting beat far too often 1 on 1. they beat BYU's defender, force help, pass to open shooter, rinse, repeat.

Lazy shifting doesn't bode well against Princeton. That game should be fun but concerns me a lot.

                • My last post was negative, but I am sky high optimistic about this team. I expect the starting lineup of Haws, Emery, Bryant, Childs, Mika by the end of the year (this year not next year or year after that), to be the best starting lineup we've put on the court, with the exception of Jimmer's final two years, going back to the 80's. The depth is not there, but that is a damn good starting lineup. Then you bring them back next year and potentially the year after that. I'll call it right now, I expect next year to be a top 20 season. And the year after that, if they all stay together and can add some depth, sky's the limit.

Dastrup is severely out of shape right now. His vertical seems to be in the 6-12" range right now. He'll get better. Same for Bryant. He does not look quick at all. He seemed to be lumbering out there. They'll both get into playing shape and will be fine.

Speaking of verticals. BYUTV announcer, I think it was Fowler, said Davis is surprisingly athletic. Very fast and good hops. OK...

I really think Dastrup should redshirt. But my prognostications skills are not much.

Braiden Shaw and Jamal "Gimme the Ball" Aytes have shown me enough that I am comfortable with them being the reserve bigs being the Unholy trinity of Mika/Childs/Davis.

And we get Corbin back in Dec.

Not enough minutes for Dastrup to contribute, especially with mission legs and mission belly. I agree that he needs a redshirt.

I'm not that big on bb redshirts. If you're not good enough to get some minutes as a freshman, most likely we don't want you hogging a scholarship in the program for five years. But this is a time, I'd be down for that. Dastrup is a project, but he looks like he has potential. And getting another year separation from Mika would be good.

You see it as I see it. If Dastrup develops he could be a really good player in a few years. This gives him a chance to develop and then be the man as a bridge between the current studs to the group with Baxter, Harding and Seljaas. BYU and Dastrup will get so much more out of a RS Senior year than they are going to get out of this year. He just cannot play more than 3 minutes without needing a break but when I do watch those 3 minutes I see something that could be really good when he gets into shape and has a year or two of seasoning/development.
