He only has to be serviceable. observers so far say his shot is still there. We won't have to rely on him as heavily as we did on emery last year, so he has the luxury of being able to take some time to come all the way back. But I think his offense will be an asset from the beginning.

Ok, so how is this going to be different than Tyler's adjustment was? BYU basketball in general and the Haws family in particular seem to have a pretty good system down for coming up to speed. I'm not saying 100% this season, but at least good enough to have an impact like Tyler and KC and Emery did.

Given the decades of disappointment, I temper my expectations so that if somebody exceeds them I can be mildly pleased. My experience is that RMs sometimes get injured early, or tire out at the end of the season. I attribute this to being away from basketball for two years.

The only thing that concerns me about TJ is how slight his build still is. Tyler's body was very different post mission, and he needed that strength to break free from the constant clutching and hand checks he encountered rubbing off screens or with the ball in his hands. I think TJ will be most effective when he can break down defenses by getting in the lane and freeing up open looks for our shooters, and I'm not sure he necessarily has the strength right now to be as effective at it as he will be. Hoping he can make up for his lack of strength with his quicks.

This is a good point. Emery also seemed to have at least a little bit of muscle on his frame. Seljaas was skinny and though his shot was money, his drive and dish game he had in high school was nonexistent against D1 competition.

Tyler was at times our only reliable scoring option with minimal post offense on the team -- thus BYU doing whatever it could to get him free to shoot and the other team selling out the defense to keep from getting him the ball. I think this team is going to present a completely different challenge to defenses, and stopping TJ wouldn't be their focal point. I don't think BYU is going to use him this year as their primary point guard either.

The glory years for me were Tourney runs, not many of them, mind you, but seeing a few wins in the Tourney. And I know this is unreasonable in light of BYU's recruiting limitations, but I'd love to see an Elite Eight or dare I mention it, a Final Four run some day. BYU still has the record for most Tourney appearances without a Final Four appearance. It would sure be fun to break that streak. This talent appears to be our best shot at breaking that record.

I do worry about TJ but my worry is based on his recent marriage, not his mission. A good woman can be distracting.

Is it just me, or does Yoeli Childs have odd mechanics on his jump shot? Seems like he holds the ball more in his off hand than most shooters. Seems like that could lead to more blocked shots than with more traditional mechanics.

Aytes looks an awful lot like Keena Young

I'm guessing that they are expecting Aytes to resemble Keena's polished post-up game since that seemed to be the word on him when he arrived. He hasn't shown any Keena-like ability to date.
