  • This team has me excited. I think we have the guys that will allow us to play with 2 post players. Interior post passing is a great way to score the ball in the half-court and we have guys who can do that. The hard part is getting guys who can guard on the edge when a switch occurs. I think we have that as well. In my mind, Childs is the key to this. he is clearly a post player at this time but has the ability to handle and guard on the perimeter. He is going to change our game completely. I'm stoked. Bryant is also interesting. He is very strong physically but his knee injury will set him back. If he can get going, he can be a 3 for us. This team could be a very good zone team depending on the players on the court. I know I'm rambling but I'm excited.

Predicted starting 5 -- Mika, Davis, Haws, Emery, Rose.

I agree. This is going to be an exciting team. Strong post play is going to make this team tough to play against, and there aren't many on our schedule who will have an answer for it. Princeton in the first game is pretty dang important since they will be a good team (rpi top 30-40, IMO) I do like that it's the first game because it will give us some extra time to prepare for their type of offense.

Just to update the thread, I saw they announced that Bryant underwent a procedure on his knee. He is expected to be back in two weeks and be ready for the season opener.

        • I had to chuckle a little at some of the comments on cougarboard, like the poster who said he expects "very little" from TJ Haws this year. So what was it about the "very little" we saw from his brother Tyler or Nick Emery coming off a mission last year that would make you think TJ isn't going to be an impact player this season? I'm not saying a superstar, but certainly Tyler coming off a mission and Nick last year were at least serviceable. BYU, and especially the Haws family seems to have figured out the process for bringing a player off a mission, especially one who has talent to begin with. TJ will be fun to watch from the beginning. I think this team will be pretty good now, and will only get better in the coming years.

Chemistry and injuries are what might prevent BYU from rising, but I expect a successful year with the talent infused into the system. It's now or never.

              Even after Bryant recovers?

When it comes to minutes played my guess is they both play 26-28 mpg. So they will both be significant contributors. They both are reported to be flexible in my understanding is either can play PG and either could play on the wing. I do wonder if Bryant has an edge over TJ in that Bryant has played a year at the D1 level and he also has had a year at BYU understanding what Rose wants done on both ends of the court. While Tyler might be the more talented player, he has been away from the game for two years. I wonder if given his situation as an RM, lack of experience with BYU's system and his lack of experience at this level that Rose will want to have Tyler focus on playing the wing for this season and get him comfortable playing in the system without the ball in his hands as much as a PG handles the ball. Perhaps that portends to Rose choosing to start Tyler and have Elijah be his first player of the bench for perimeter players as Elijah could come in for any starter (assuming starters are LJ, Nick and TJ). Now as for who is playing when the game is on the line, that is something I am really interested in seeing how it develops. I guess it will depend on matchups and how players are playing that individual game. I will be disappointed if Elijah cannot defend better than a brand new RM true freshman in TJ. If the post players do develop into consistent reliable scoring threats I wonder if having only one really good perimeter shooter is what is needed at the end and so Rose will elect to play his better defenders at crunch time - assuming all get and stay healthy.

What, in your opinion, would qualify as a successful year?

On the "now or never" thought, do you use "now" to mean "this season" or do you use "now" to mean these next 3 seasons that the LP 3 play together?

Interesting that all four of our guys that will likely cover the three guard positions are all combo kind of guys. You could make a case for any of the four manning the point, and they all might at different times.

My reference for TJ is Emery. They were both good point guards in high school, but I think TJ has the slight edge in terms of court vision, handling the ball, and running an offense. Since Emery came in and in his first year back off a mission, he was able to start, succeed, and play the point at times on offense, I expect TJ to do the same if called upon. Emery was third best player on a decent BYU team last year. I'm not sure Bryant or Rose would have been. So again based on the law of association or distribution or something, I'm expecting TJ to probably be a better player than those two.

                    • I think we were a bit spoiled with Emery and Haws the elder coming off missions. Not sure why, but I'm thinking TJ may struggle coming off the mission. IMO, he was a better HS player than either Tyler or Nick so the potential is there, but the mission scares me in his case.

No reason whatsoever? Just a hunch?

Successful would mean make it to the Dance, win one game and make it look as if the next year or two could be special. Depending how they come together, perhaps win two games in the Tourney, but that would ultra-successful.

BYU has been marginally successful, mostly due to a lack of talent. This will be the most talent Rose has ever had in his career at BYU. If we are going to see something special, it will be this year and in the next two years.

I guess mostly that I'm off the opinion that missions hurt the player, especially at the beginning and that guys like Tyler and Nick are the exception, not the rule.

Or more simply put, I'm a damn pessimist and the opinion is indefensible.

He only has to be serviceable. observers so far say his shot is still there. We won't have to rely on him as heavily as we did on emery last year, so he has the luxury of being able to take some time to come all the way back. But I think his offense will be an asset from the beginning.
