Kaufusi improved defensively but really hasn't played enough basketball to be a great offensive player. He is thinking too much. If he gets enough reps in to allow him to turn off his brain, he could still make a great offensive jump. That said, I can't think of a reason to play them both at the same time. If both blossomed to 3 point threats, I could see them together but otherwise I'm with Rose in the desire to take a good sized defender with the ability to hit the 3 and play him as your 4. With the size and athleticism of current basketball players at the major college level, you can't create enough spacing to really run a 2 big system.

    • Does Childs look like a young Kawhi Leonard to anyone else?

      • Let's slow down with the Kawhi Leonard comparisons for Childs... Gotta say he looks like an immediate improvement over Kyle Davis. Davis will probably start because he's a senior tho

          • Davis would have to be able to shoot consistently to be a stretch 4. Also, he has a hands problem and his basketball iq degraded.

BTW, the BYU players in question played in a Dave Rose offense built on high-scoring games. That should more than offset your fudge factor.
I think we should wager. 10 ppg o/u in 16-17. He has to play in not less than 20 games. You game?

                That sounds reasonable. Sure.

Anyways, I'm a big fan of Elijah Bryant... I'm reading a lot of complaints about his freshman stats at Elon (poor shooting % & poor Ast/TO ratio). But step back and look at the bigger picture.

He was a score first point guard at Elon with an insane 35.5% usage rate -- as a freshman! He's not going to have to shoulder nearly the same scoring burden at BYU. And as for his Ast/TO ratio; in high school at an elite basketball prep school, Bryant showed he can effectively distribute the basketball.

                    Quote from Bryant:
"I like to get my teammates involved in the game," Bryant said. "I know I scored a lot last year but one of the cool things about BYU is that they always make the next pass. If you make the next pass, the next guy is open and that may be you the next time."

He's a good perimeter defender and can handle the ball... BYU is going to desperately need that next year especially with Emery/Haws playing big minutes. (Neither Emery nor Haws is physically powerful enough to be considered a plus defender)

I think Emery and Haws are combo guards who will be able to split time as pg or sg. I also think we have a guy in Davis who can be a stretch 4 and likes to play off the bounce but was pressed into service by our lack offensive post players. With Mika in the post we will be able to play Davis at the stretch 4. Childs is easily athletic enough to guard the 3, can shoot from range and is comfortable off the bounce. Also, we don't really need another deep threat with TJ and Emery consuming all the perimeter shots. What do you guys think?

Starting 5 of Emery, Haws, Childs, Davis and Mika with Kaufusi, Bryant and Chatman as the rest of the rotation. Spot minutes for everyone else with a possible redshirt for Dastrup if he has continued eating.
So you think Childs' natural position in Rose's offense would be the 3? That should help allay the concerns from this article that claimed we have no natural 3's on the roster for next year:

Here's a look at projected look at the natural or preferred positions and class year of the members of 15 man roster:

                      Freshman Sophomore Junior Senior
PG TJ Haws Jordan Chatman, Elijah Bryant
SG Steven Beo Nick Emery (Davin Guinn)
                      SF
PF Yoeli Childs, Payton Dastrup Jakob Hartsock, (Graham Pingree) Jamal Aytes Kyle Davis
C Alan Hamson Braiden Shaw, Eric Mika Corbin Kaufusi

BYU won't have a single player that is a natural small forward. That blank row really stands out and it should. The 2016-17 BYU basketball roster has a pretty significant hole.

                          • BYU really plays 3 guards and 2 forwards... I think the concerns about not having any 3's are overblown
