I don't see this group getting together this season. Where will the leadership come from. Rose needs to be the leader but Emery wants to be that leader and it doesn't look as if he has learned anything over last year.

They aren't making shots because they aren't running the plays Rose is calling. EB won't contribute this year either. Too bad, Jackson went to Duke, for BYU, not for him.
Agreed, they've had some trouble staying within the offense. They've also missed a lot of open shots that were within the offense, which I think has messed with their heads and led to not playing within the offense. You would hope they would have been further ahead than this, but all these shooters are still learning their roles being on the same team. The bigs are probably further ahead as a group than many of us thought, and the guards are probably doing a pretty decent job of getting the ball to them for the most part. Fans are characteristically not patient and revealing that their low expectations were actually fake low expectations. I like how Archaea and Mike on that other site have already thrown in the towel on Haws, calling him not a D1 talent. Nice. The team can still get this on the right track with wins over Weber and Colorado. We'll see.

Let me know when Mike says he can guard TJ.

Yeah, that makes me feel better about TJ's future.

Ha. Pretty much. Never have I seen a freshman get this much PT right off the bat. He is raw talent that does make errors, no doubt, but he's going to be so good. Also, Mike is dumb. He forfeit his right to have an opinion on basketball long ago.

Colorado will show whether the team has learned. Yet, the team needs to be more patient in offensive sets, and Haws needs to make some of the wide open shots. He's quite a few opportunities, and he shouldn't be allowed unlimited opportunities. I still don't get what Emery is thinking, when we have nobody under the basket, or maybe one player to the defending team's two players, and he jacks up a 27 foot jump shot that clangs off the front of the rim. There are good early shots and bad early shots and Emery is often guilty of the latter. Every once in a great moon, he makes one of those crazy shots, and I cringe knowing we will see three more in sequence that look just like it but which don't find the bottom of the next. Haws may not have his legs. I keep wondering why his jump shot is so unreliable, as I had heard he was a decent shooter.

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

As long as it is an uncontested three and not from Jimmer range, I don't mind him taking it in transition even if we don't have rebounders in place. An open three from normal range is as good of a shot as we get on most possessions. Its the ones he takes that are heavily contested or from 3 feet behind the NBA line that are the problem.

Emery made a lot of shots like that last year and in many cases they've been shots at the end of runs that would have absolutely buried the opponent had they gone in. I agree with flystripper that those shots aren't necessarily bad when he takes them. But he's the only one on the team who should be allowed to take those. It's the contested ones with a lot of time on the shotclock and the ones too far away that he needs to stop taking.

                • So all summer long we heard about Elijah Bryant destroying our guards and that he would be the best player on the team. Then we actually see Bryant play (somewhat limited) and he looks bad. That tells me a lot about Haws and co.

Eh, mission-emaciation and not having played since high school is the culprit for Haws. Once he has a good game things will start to roll for him (the fragile psyche of the college basketball player cannot be overstated).

Emery is the big mystery to me right now. He's an enigma. He should be playing much more under control and getting Haws involved. It's like they are competing against each other sometimes.

I was always skeptical of these "dominating practice" reports, but I never thought of it that way. maybe he really was dominating practice and that just wasn't saying much because the guards aren't that good. ugh.

I think they mostly showed pretty good patience against Weber State. And Haws had a pretty good game -- certainly the best we've seen from him since against Princeton.

I'm thinking of all the "dominating practice" reports over the years vs how they did actually. I'd guess it's somewhere about 5:1, sucked vs met expectation. It's starting to be if I hear someone dominated practice, I can pretty much guarantee they will be awful.

                            • I am a big Dave Rose fan. I think he has done a great job given the limitations that just comes with the territory. That said I watched last nights game and thought I was watching a ward basketball team as far as flow goes. Granted the talent is far, far, far better than a ward team so don't rip me on that.
