  • I like this team too. Wouldn't surprise me if they are a year away from doing anything of significance. But it also wouldn't surprise me if they get it figured out and go on a run in conference play.

Speaking of figuring it out, we were 22% from 3 on Saturday (9% in the first half). I know this can't last forever but yeesh.

    • Yeah that is pitiful when we have the shooters we have. I think they are really leaning on the bigs too much and not finding the good outside shots. It drives me nuts when Emery jacks up a three after bringing it down and not passing it once. Jimmer can do that- he drilled those shots. We need to pass it inside first and then look for the kickout to the perimeter to score if Mika gets doubled.

Daugherty explained it on the broadcast. He stated if you are not operating your offense, good shooters taking bad shots not in flow lose confidence and don't make the shots. He claimed it was the result of the guards not playing within the offense but panicking. That made a lot of sense.

        • Not playing on an NBA court should help the three point shooting. Or maybe we should actually paint an NBA three point line at the MC and Rose could tell the team you're NOT allowed to shoot from behind this line.

I'm usually pretty docile when I watch a game on TV with the missus, but during the first half Saturday I was screaming at Emery and others for shooting from way beyond the NBA arc. Is it possible he believed that was the collegiate arc? I was going nuts, but was becalmed by a fresh warm batch of chocolate chip cookies so I got through the game without an aneurysm.

I am currently in the cardiac trauma center where only a friendly nurse who has allowed me to access her computer enables me to post. Hopefully I convalesce quickly.

              • I'm trying to remember the last time the Cougars dropped three of four. I don't think they've done that in a while.

The shocking aspect of it all is the hype surrounding these players for a very modest schedule. The players are good enough and the schedule is modest enough to turn it around. For purposes of the NCAA tourney, BYU may be on the outside looking in because it has failed to win any Top 50 RPI games. The UVU game is a stinging, horrible blemish that won't go away.

There is still time. The UVU loss is bad, but will not end up being as bad as it felt. And we have four cracks at (current) RPI top 10 teams in conference play. We can still play our way into an at-large bid but we can't have those head-scratcher conference losses and we have to get a couple games against SMC/Gonzaga. Tall order, yes.

                    • Man seeing Gonzaga put ass kickings on perennial powerhouses SDSU and AZ, you gotta like their chances to repeat. However, we seem to do well against them. Their post game is sick, but I think we can shut down that big bearded ogre they have once Kaufusi gets back.

You mean for the 5-8 min Kaufusi is on the court before fouling out?

He averaged 16 minutes a game last year and less than three fouls a game. I'm not worried about him being able to stay on the court. I doubt Rose wants/needs him for more than 12-16 minutes a game. I'm worried about his basketball skill level after shelving basketball for eight months.

By his own admission last month he said that he would struggle initially with being too physical as well as the rule changes wrt to defense. Now I'm sure that's going to be explained and coached into his brain and I'm also sure he was being coy with the person that asked the question but it's possible that he doesn't adapt initially and spends more time on the bench than he should.

I agree though that he will be the best option to take on the Zags, Grizzly Adams.

With the out of the norm depth we have among the bigs, I don't know that Kaufusi and fouling is going to be as much of a concern. This team is going to be very good if the guards could start making shots.

But the guards are not playing within the offense. Emery jacking up shots with no rebounder from outside Jimmer range is not within the offense. Haws can't hit any outside shot to save his life, and is a complete bum on defense. He is also a turnover waiting to happen. Rose had an off-night against USC. I don't see this group getting together this season. Where will the leadership come from. Rose needs to be the leader but Emery wants to be that leader and it doesn't look as if he has learned anything over last year.

They aren't making shots because they aren't running the plays Rose is calling. EB won't contribute this year either. Too bad, Jackson went to Duke, for BYU, not for him.
