Time to get a new thread going. Everyone's favorite play by play sat down with Rose to talk last season and look to next season.

    Below are the tweets.
Dave Rose is taking time today to meet with local media who regularly cover his team; I enjoyed our sit-down and will tweet a few highlights
    ...
Rose on heading into 2013-14: "We were a little bit nervous about the roster, with only 10 scholarship guys eligible to play."
    ...
"As a staff, that was our biggest concern: could we make it through the season, with a limited group of guys?"

"From that standpoint, (the season) was just terrific. For the most part, we stayed healthy, and the guys gave us all that they had."

"We ended up (in) the NCAAT, which is your first goal. We want to advance, and that didn't happen this year; that's disappointing."

Rose on whether Collinsworth RS might be a consideration: "Not at this point; no, not at all. He's 100% committed to the healing process."

Docs gave KC a 6-8 month recovery window; Rose says timetable fits well with BYU's plans for KC. "We won't have to try to speed him up."

Rose on KC rehab:"We can go into the end of October, first of November if we have to--or we might have him at the end of August; we'll see."

Rose on potential scholarship crunch in 2014-15: "We won't really address that until we get to the end of the academic term."

BYU has 14 projected players for 13 schollie spots; Rose: "If we get to a crunch, that will be a tough decision we have to make as a staff."

Rose will meet with his players before he and staff leave for Final Four on Wednesday. "I'm pretty honest and straightforward w/ the guys."

Rose: "A lot of times, their mindset changes from those pretty frank and open discussions."

Rose: "By the first of May, we'll have a pretty good idea of how that part of this equation works."

More Rose on KC: "They believe that he'll be able to get in the gym w/ the ball a lot sooner than 6-8 months, on his own, at his own pace."

Rose: "That's a part of the healing process that (Kyle) is really going to enjoy--just being in the gym, shooting shots and free throws."

Rose on 2014-15: "As difficult as that locker room was after the Oregon game... I just felt like starting right now, we have a better team."

Rose:"We have a stronger program for next year. W/ all of the things that we still have to accomplish, we're moving in the right direction."

Rose:"a lot of times, you feel like 'whoa, we have so much work to do try to stay where we are or move ahead'"; says not the case in '14-15.

Rose on Chatman: "Right now, I think he'll come in as a combo guard, to get minutes at both positions. Great size, really good skill level."

Asked about any potential redshirt options in 2014-15, Rose said "I don't have plans to redshirt any of these guys."

Rose noted that Jordan Chatman has returned from his LDS mission (Taiwan), and that AFHS product Ryan Andrus will be on 2014-15 roster.

Rose on Jamal Aytes: "We'll be able to throw the ball to him in the post and get positive plays...he'll demand a double-team eventually."

Rose on I. Neilson: "We'll play him a little differently in that true '5' position, w/ him trailing and his ability to shoot from up there."

Rose on Andrus: "His size, his ability to run the floor, and his feel for the game will fit right in with the group that we have."

Rose: "The core of post guys really intrigues me...it's a group that is untested but I think a group that is really talented."

Rose on Chase Fischer: "Chase will give us another scoring threat from the perimeter, which this past year's team could have used at times."

Rose only needs 4 more gms for '14-15. Maui = 3 gms there and a guarantee home date; also at USU, Weber St., home v. Utah, UMass, Stanford.

Rose: "I think some will be home-and-home series, but some will also hopefully be where (teams) come in here and play us without a return."

Rose on WCC sked:"It seems like the tougher teams in league will be later in our conf sked; we have make sure we don't get tricked by that."

Rose: "(We can't) think 'oh, the first 3 or 4 weeks of league are going to be easier than the last 3-4 wks.' They're all really important."

Here now, a few tweets of Dave Rose's comments about Tyler Haws from earlier today...

Rose: "Ty's consistency has been taken for granted--not only by fans by also by the (coaching) staff and his teammates."

Rose:"(Haws) is just really, really good at what he does and continues to get better at it. He'll have a great offseason & terrific Sr. yr."

Rose: "People ask me why Ty doesn't get the same national attention that Jimmer got..."

Rose:"...and Jimmer didn't really get his natl attention until a couple of mos. into his Sr. year--that's when Jimmermania really took off."

Rose: "If we're good (in 2014-15) and we have the success early that we had with (Jimmer) that year, I could see that happening with Ty."

I would think that having opened this year's conference schedule with losses to Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine, the returning players wouldn't have that mindset.

      More tweets!

Earlier, I tweeted out Dave Rose comments from about each of the 5 newcomers and about Tyler Haws; here now, some one-tweets on the others.

Rose on KC: "Versatility and leadership...we're all so excited to see where that can take us the next two years."

Rose on Anson Winder. "His defensive presence is really solid for us on the guard line; his offensive improvement has been just tremendous."

Rose on N. Austin:"I'm so proud of Nate...his value will never, ever be able to be appreciated because his numbers don't warrant attention."

Rose on M Carlino: "Matt had a terrific season in a role that I don't think he really projected, and neither did we. He was so good in it."

Rose on Skyler Halford: "What Skyler will always give you is 100% effort...he's 100% full-bore all the time, and that rubs off."

Rose on FBIV: "We played Frank out of position almost all year, and we'll get him back out on the guard line...somewhere in that 1-2 spot."

Rose on L. Worthington: "Wants to be a physical def. presence and also a skilled offensive player who can really help us in the low post."

Rose on Josh Sharp: "You can always depend on Josh...he's the ultimate team guy. His minutes had a real effect on our ability to win games."
Rose's comments on Halford sounds like the basketball equivalent of a sweet spirit.

Apparently Skyler's only value is as the team's version of Rudy.
So Russell...what do you love about music? To begin with, everything.

Not much hope for Andrus. Rose's comments on him were almost exactly what he said about Worthington.

I don't Andrus was ever touted as a star. Worthington had a lot more hype with almost 40 offers, including Butler and DePaul, maybe even Marquette. I think he clearly will not be a star but will prove useful as a banger and large body in the middle. I remember seasons where we wish we had a big stiff that could push people around and then foul them.
I don't think Andrus will be a bigtime guy either. I also don't know about Isaac Neilsen. He was not very highly recruited at all and is skinny as a rail. It sounds like the are not planning for him to be 5 much at all.

I think that what I get from all of this is that BYU's roster for next year will not include somebody of which we are not already aware. Currently there are 14 players with a scholarship allocated and one of those will not return. The obvious two choices are Sharp and Halford. Time will tell. My guess is Halford because I think there is significant more depth on the perimeter and I think Sharp is more likely to be needed in emergency situations/foul trouble.

It seems to me that the coaching staff obviously thinks that they don't need more help in the post for next year. It will be interesting to see the roles come together.

I think BYU will play Austin and Worthington at the 5 next year. To start the year likely both will start until Aytes comes available. BYU Post-Aytes availability will likely start Jamal and Nate at the 4 and 5 respectively. Worthington will come off the bench to play the 5 and it sounds like Nelson will come off to play the 4. From where I sit I think we see that come January BYU will tighten the rotation to mostly just be Jamal, Austin and Worthington. Of the 80 minutes available at those positions I think they will take up 70-75 minutes with Nelson getting 5-10 per game. Andrus/Sharp will only see time in cases of injury or foul trouble - which with Nate and Luke as our primary defenders in the post I expect to happen frequently enough that even I might be tempted to whine about BYU not getting another post player for next year that was ready to play, as I am not including Andrus as ready to play.

On the perimeter obviously BYU is going to struggle if Collinsworth doesn't heal and return to form. BYU was so unathletic on both ends of the court without Kyle against Oregon. If it is Halford that leaves that gives BYU the following perimeter players:

              Collinsworth
              Winder
              Haws
              Carlino
              Bartley
              Fischer
              Chatman

Rose said he doesn't plan to redshirt anyone, which is fine but I wonder if Frank Bartley could really benefit from a redshirt year. But I trust Rose. My prediction is Kyle C, Winder and Haws will start. I think we see a lot of Carlino and Fischer off the bench and less of Bartley and Chatman. In fact my guess is once we get close to January Chatman will likely see many DNP and Bartley will play depending upon matchups, foul trouble and whether BYU needs his perimeter defense off the bench. One thing I do like is that I think BYU will have finally found a set starting group on the perimeter. The inconsistency of the last 3 seasons of shuffling starting lineups and roles has been frustrating and did not help to build any continuity and consistent gameplanning. I do think we are past that for the time being. I think days good MattyC shows up he will play a lot. When bad MattyC shows up his minutes will be limited. Winder will be the guy who covers the opposing teams best perimeter player. He is the best BYU has for that but he isn't what I could call a stopper in that role. Haws will be Haws and obviously we all have to wait to see how things develop for Kyle C.

              Here are your what ifs:

If Collinsworth heals, gets into shape and improves his ability to shot just slightly.
If Jamal Aytes can give BYU 10 ppg, mostly out of half court offensive sets, and 6 rpg
If Worthington develops into a good post defender who can average 20 mpg without fouling out and getting 4.5 rpg.
If Nate Austin can improve offensively and average 7 ppg

Then I think BYU will have a real good team and be good enough to be seeded high enough to wear home jerseys in their first NCAA tourney game. To be honest for you if Collinsworth had not gotten hurt I would be expecting that from BYU for next year. IMO his health is the difference between BYU being a threat to win a game or being a double digit seed who loses badly on day 1.

It sucks that we won't have Aytes and may not have KC until the season is well underway. We're going to have another difficult non-con. Probably top 25 again when you consider the Maui Invitational games and also UMass, Stanford and Utah at home.

I thought Frank looked very good guarding on the perimeter against Oregon. He will help a lot next year on the defensive end.

I think Winder sees 28 mpg next year. So will Haws and Collinsworth, if Kyle C is healthy. Of the remaining 36 minutes I think Carlino and Fischer will get the first shot in most games. I don't see much time for Frank next year. That is why I think a redshirt would serve him well.

Acknowledging today's date...I was going to suggest earlier today that this is the reason that Coach Rose didn't seem too worried about a scholarship crunch but I didn't want to sound defeatist nor did I want to spread gossip on this day of silliness.
