Good luck Matt. His history suggested this might be his route. I think he's made our team better the last three years and it would have been better with him next year. The team was at peak performance when Matty played great basketball. When that happened, we could beat anyone. Too bad it didn't happen a little more often. It's hard to imagine where he would find a greener pasture than playing for Rose. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.

This could really suck if KC isn't ready to play. Sure KC is better than Carlino, but Carlino is a serviceable point guard and when he's hot, he's hot. If KC isn't ready to go at the beginning of the season then who will play PG and who is the backup?
Of course, Matty also does remind me a bit of Apo in that both came in with big time hype but never really reached any status above serviceable. It seems every year people are waiting for Apo or Matty to turn into the steady star and every year they disappoint."Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Carlino was far more than serviceable. You don't get his career totals in just 2.75 seasons by being serviceable. Any hype he failed to live up to was thrust on him by those expecting him to be the next Jimmer. And regardless of KC's health, his transfer hurts this team.Originally posted by Moliere View PostThis could really suck if KC isn't ready to play. I echo this sentiment exactly and add that I will follow him a little and hope he gets what he is looking for. As the ESPN guys said a bajillion times, when he gets confident he can be a truly great player. He handled this season very well coming off the bench and seemed to be a great team guy.Originally posted by wapiti View PostGood luck Matt. His history suggested this might be his route. He will be missed, but like you said I'm not losing any sleep over it because it was almost expected.

Agreed. He was going to be a big part of the team next year especially with KC coming off an injury.Originally posted by Surfah View PostCarlino was far more than serviceable. Sounds like Rose is expecting Bartley to get minutes at the 1. Not sure who else if Kyle can't go. Fischer? The big man situation sounds rough as well. I will enjoy next years bball team, because I have no expectations for them and I really like watching lots of players on the team.Originally posted by Pelado View PostSounds like Rose is expecting Bartley to get minutes at the 1. Haws is awesome, Luke made me smile before his epic thread even started, Dobby.... and I truely love watching Austin give everything he has. It should be fun. I'll watch at least a dozen games no matter how the team plays.
I wish low expectations was as fun in football.

I have high expectations for this team once KC is back and fully up to speed. I think we'll compete for a conference title and get to the NCAA's. Outside of Tyler, no one has the upside of MC if it all came together for him but this team can get solid consistent play from its young talent and be a solid NCAA team.Originally posted by Vic Vega View PostThe big man situation sounds rough as well. The number of games makes it more enjoyable to watch basketball than football. Plus the thrill of making the Tourney coupled with the headiness of winning a game or two makes basketball the stuff of dreams.Originally posted by Vic Vega View PostThe big man situation sounds rough as well. Losing Carlino hurts only in the fact that he is 10x the player Dobby is and would be needed if KC is not ready. That said, I do think Matty saw the writing on the wall that his minutes were going to go down with Fischer being eligible, IV being more experienced, and the arrival of Jordan Chatman who I think will have just as much impact as KC had this season. Fischer, Chatman, and IV make us so much better defensively on the perimeter where we absolutely sucked last year. Plus, Rose can finally play more man than zone as he has the horses to do so.
Obviously the key is KC coming back. From the sounds of it, his AC tear was not as bad as some so that is why they anticipate a quicker recovery. If he can be ready by the start of the season I am thinking this team could make a pretty big push next year.

I agree with this. He was good. It will hurt the team. However, I think that the role that Rose was using him in was the perfect role for him and the team. His inconsistency hurt the team a great deal because you can't have that type of mercurial play from your point guard. It is too disrupting to the other players and team as a whole. Dave gave Matty every chance to become a star and in the end Dave made the right decision, IMO, to put Matt in a role where if good Matty showed up he could play a significant role but if bad Matty showed up his minutes were more limited and the team was not as dependent upon him.Originally posted by Surfah View PostCarlino was far more than serviceable. Regardless, there is no other way to spin this as a big loss to the hoops team. But from what I can gather it is the result of Rose honestly letting Matty know what his role was and would be for next year. Such are the stakes with a kid like Carlino but I think the risk was worth it and I am glad Rose brought him in and for the good things the kid did at BYU. I think it is a poor decision for Matt as I still think Rose would give him more latitude to try and be what he wants to be and for Matt to compete at a high level. I doubt he finds that type of latitude on a team with the potential of next year's BYU club. I wish him well.Do Your Damnedest In An Ostentatious Manner All The Time!

Chatman will not have the impact KC had this past year. KC was/is the best player on BYU's team. I also agree that if KC doesn't come back Matt's decision will really sting both BYU and Matt as well. That is another reason why I don't think this is a great basketball decision by Matt.Originally posted by A-Train View PostLosing Carlino hurts only in the fact that he is 10x the player Dobby is and would be needed if KC is not ready. I like Matt and wish he had been consistent. Even an inconsistent Matt was a help to the team.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostChatman will not have the impact KC had this past year. I would guess it is all about playing time. I doubt Matt is going to end up on a really good team somewhere. Really good teams don't need inconsistent players.
