Against Utah the offense was far worse than normal but the defense was actually better than average for this team. Every game is different. Having Austin's rebounds also would have helped that night.
Agree. This isn't football, where the offense and defense are different players. If several of the guys who get a significant amount of BYU's minutes are injured or out, it presumably impacts the point differential at the end of the game. This assumes a lack of equal-or-better-quality reserves, which is a safe assumption at the BYU.

    • We'll have to wait longer for Austin to turn around the season.

      • Geez, this has to be the worst injury season for BYU male athletes in history.

        • Well there goes maybe 4 rebounds and probably a few points. Hopefully Isaac neilson can pick up some of the slack and jack up a few extra 3PAs that Austin would have curiously taken.

Most of those players you are describing generate plenty of scoring but are mostly terrible defenders even when healthy. There are times when Haws is actuality a liability on defense.

The only injury that you could credibly say has hurt us is Winder's injury. His absence definitely hurts us offensively and defensively.
I get what you are saying here, but I don't think this post fully expresses just how awful our post play has been this year. It is so awful that losing a stiff like Nate Austin probably made a significant difference. And I have no idea how well Aytes can play, but it is tough to imagine him not being better than these guys.

Sophomore forward Luke Worthington, who has scored one point and grabbed four rebounds in his past five starts, will again get the nod on Saturday.

Rose said Worthington starts instead of fellow healthy big men Isaac Neilson and Corbin Kaufusi because he understands the defensive game plan better.

"He is the [big] guy who can execute all of the game plan the best," Rose said. "I think Corbin and Isaac are guys who are good at some things, but you can't really determine what they are going to start the first four or five minutes of the game with, so Luke is the guy who has better comprehension of the plan."

I think you are just being a contrarian on Austin the last couple pages. He got 8 rpg last year and well over 5 this year in limited action. That is significant even if we weren't at a historic low water mark for inside play.

Uggh. That stinks. We probably don't have to have him to beat USD or USF or SCU at home next week. Definitely need him after that for Pepperdine though.

                      • Shouldn't that be in the Silver Linings thread?

                        • I considered it but quickly decided against it, determining that the temptation to violate the entire premise of that thread would be too strong.
