I wish Utah could get a coach this horrible.
Even when going to final fours his teams vastly underachieved given their respective talent level.

In 2006, UCLA was a 2 seed and lost in the championship game to Florida. Florida had 3 players that were picked in the top 10 in the 2007 draft and 2 picked in the 2nd round. None of UCLA's players were lottery picks.

In 2007, UCLA was again a 2 seed and made the final four. They lost again to Florida, but this time in the semifinals. Again, Florida had 3 lottery picks. Only future lottery pick on UCLA was Russel Westbrook and he was a freshman.

in 2008, UCLA was a 1 seed and lost to Memphis in the semifinals. Memphis was also a 1 seed and had Rose, the eventually top pick in the 2008 draft, on their team. This is the only year of the 3 that you can argue that UCLA underachieved. In both 2006 and 2007, Florida had more talent than UCLA.

It's not as easy to win with McD All-Ams as it might seem. They're poison.

Agreed. I don't get the Howland hate.

Howland was 57-11 at Pitt from 2001 - 2003, two 1st place big east finishes. Check out his rosters for those years. I doubt there is a NBA player in the bunch. Brandin Knight was the "star" on those teams, iirc.

It's his style of play. Slow, plodding, physical, in-your-face, and boring.

That's fine, but the criticisms here seem more personally directed. Do people really think he's a horrible person because of his offense?

Tubby Josh Smith is transferring. 2nd transfer in 3 days for Howland after Tyler Lamb asked for his release the other day. I have lost track of the number of players that have left in the last couple of years.

UCLA only has 8 players on scholarship on the roster and 4 of them are true freshmen. But you guys can keep waxing on about how great a coach he was.

funk has already admitted that his fan ship of Howland is because of the boring, unathletic hoops he insists on ruining the P12 with, because it reminds funk of Big Rick.

And then forgets about players on his bench. But I don't hate him for it. We got Carlino because of it.

He needs to be at a school that can't recruit five star players. That's what his system (motion offense, focus on defense, etc.) was made for. It's a system he learned from Jerry Pimm at Utah. It's a system Majerus used, as some have noted. It's not a system for thoroughbreds. See North Carolina. You can hardly ever tell there's any coaching there. They just run up and down the Court. JTII has had the same problem at GTown and I'm glad he's lost his McDonald All-Amercans. Good riddance. Howland's system is for a program that has to overachieve with second and third tier recruits. He should have gone to Utah after Boylen. It would have been a marriage in heaven.

You're arguing that his players are too good for his system? That is just ridiculous. And even if your argument had some basis in reality, how is Howland still not culpable? He's the one recruiting these guys. And don't great coaches adapt their systems to the strengths of their players?

Thanks for the morning laughter though. It's a great way to start my day.
