Wow I had no idea what was going on there @ UCLA.. especially with O'Doyle there. That has to be some change for Carlino going from that team to a team with guys like Rose, Jimmer, Hartsock, Davies...

What a bunch of morans. And Howland chief of them all. Impossible to hate on Wooden and to destroy the remnants of what he built there but Howland seems to be doing a pretty decent job of imploding that place. I have never really agreed with getting rid of Lavin. The guy was a good coach, and by all accounts he was a good guy.

I cant remember the name of the player...he was a nobody and didnt play much at all, but he was on the Petros and Money show once talking about the decision he faced between going to some Ivy league school and being a serious student or going to UCLA and trying to walk on and fulfill his dream of making the team. His dad counseled him that a degree from an Ivy would be awesome, but to be able to tell people that he played basketball for UCLA would open far more doors for him throughout life (also, it isnt like a degree from fucla hurts you much, either). So the guy goes to westwood, walks on, barely ever plays, graduates, and goes on to make a load of dough in his career. but he says that of all his accomplishments, nothing stops conversations like when he tells people he played at UCLA. As ridiculous as that stupid 8 count sounds, it means something to play for that school. There are only a handful of hoops programs that can really truly claim such a thing and UCLA is one of them. How some of these kids piss away that opportunity is beyond me. It sounds like Howland is playing a major role is such a shocking lack of discipline. Compare and contrast to Wooden's quiet, dignified discipline, when Wooden only had to tell Walton once to shave and cut his hair and that was the end of that. Wooden called Kareem "Lewis" until the day he died and Kareem never protested. Howland has guys getting wasted on ecstasy and punching each other in practice. sheesh.

I keep thinking they could have still had Lavin, maybe never have been great like they were for 2-3 years with Howland but would have been very good and consistent.

Also wouldn't have been the leader in destroying P12 hoops with his first to 50 wins strategy.

Love this post, except for this. Lavin would've never taken UCLA to three straight Final Fours and a NC game. Never. And I think as a USC fan, you recognize you might be a minority of one among Bruin fans.

Then again, Lavin would've never presided over a mess like this. When you think about the influence Wooden has on UCLA hoops, maybe avoiding a mess like this trumps on-court success. When you think about it, there are elements of playing at UCLA that sound very much like playing at BYU that you described, only on a smaller scale. There's certainly a higher-power element in play with Wooden/LDS Church.

Lavin is a better coach now than he was at UCLA. They should have hired him to replace Howland and not to replace Harrick. Lavin was just not ready when he was handed the reigns to the most storied program in college basketball history.

There are a handful of guys that are just too damn good to let go and Howland is one of them. Howland has at least 2 more strikes before anyone would even consider canning him.

It's hilarious how revered John Wooden is, considering how his program was most likely the dirtiest (in terms of player payments) of its era.
