                                I think that is a fair statement, yes. Donute is making two observations, one about the Utes and one about BYU. His first statement would be ironic if your assumption were true. The irony would be heightened if, in fact, BYU fans were also inept at promoting their own.

                                The Jimmermania thread observation actually weakens the claim that Donute's comment was ironic.

                                LA Ute has since changed his categorization from "ironic" to "funny" so I think the issue is now moot.

                                                            I believe there are several kinds of irony. If my memory of seventh-grade English class serves me right, there's verbal irony, situational irony, and dramatic irony.

                                                            Verbal irony is pretty much just sarcasm, when the meaning is the opposite of the literal.

                                                            Dramatic irony is when, in drama, the audience knows something that the character does not.

                                                            Situational irony is when an action produces the opposite of or very different from its intended effect or expected outcome (e.g., the fire-station burning down, or a broken front door at the Home Depot). In this regard, I think Alanis' song has a few examples of irony (e.g., a free ride when you've already paid).

                                                            I believe LA Ute was referring to the situational irony of BYU fans pointing out the achievement of a Ute. Not completely opposite, but still contrary to expected action from a BYU-fan.

                                                            Also, FWIW, I believe the term "ironic" derives from ancient Greek.
