Verbal irony is pretty much just sarcasm, when the meaning is the opposite of the literal.

Dramatic irony is when, in drama, the audience knows something that the character does not.

Situational irony is when an action produces the opposite of or very different from its intended effect or expected outcome (e.g., the fire-station burning down, or a broken front door at the Home Depot). In this regard, I think Alanis' song has a few examples of irony (e.g., a free ride when you've already paid).

I believe LA Ute was referring to the situational irony of BYU fans pointing out the achievement of a Ute. Not completely opposite, but still contrary to expected action from a BYU-fan.

Also, FWIW, I believe the term "ironic" derives from ancient Greek.

You're right. Let's get it back on track.

After watching Andre's final game in the Huntsman Center his senior season, I bumped into Andre and his mom and a bunch of family at TGIF on Foothill drive. He asked me to take their picture in the lobby, which I did with hands still trembling from the excitement of the game. Andre was gracious and friendly, but me shooting the breeze with him didn't help me score with the girl I was out with. I think she was hoping Andre would move in, even though he was there with a girlfriend of his own.

The team used to always go there after home games. Or frequently anyway. Super and I went there all the time just to bump into them.
