I'm not sure but I think the ostrich with its head in the sand is intended to make the point that there are serious problems in the Utah basketball program right now, and that people like you and me are oblivious to those problems. Yes, it's an odd effort at making a dubious point, but we might as well humor the guys.

We just set a school record for the worst margin of defeat in over 100 years of Utah basketball.

That's not logic, just facts.

Only one quibble. I think we have seen improvement. Compared to the beginning of the season, they have a concept of what the offense should look like, and they have played with better defensive intensity during conference play than they did in the nonconference schedule.

The trouble is that you can improve 15%, but if that improvement is from 31% to 46%, it is still an "F". I do think that the team is currently better than the sum of its parts, which gives me some confidence in Larry. But they are so woefully outclassed talent-wise, that the improvement does not matter in the results.

Nah, he advocated the process while I'm insistent upon the results. No sane person would grade this season anything other than an 'F.' But there's a lot of room between a grade of 20 percent and a grade of 50 percent, so I see where those who are insistent we are getting better are coming from. I just take no joy in scoring a 50. Talk to me when we're passing, and then I might buy that we're getting better under Larry.

I agree, and will add this: In my law firm I am involved in evaluating the professional progress and success of my colleagues. When someone has been struggling in some manner we always look at what we call "trajectory." A partner may have had a bad year, but if we can see that he/she has made changes and has a plan for improvement that is credible and already showing signs of positive results, we adopt a "wait and see" approach. I see good reason for hope in the trajectory of the Utah basketball program.

Agreed. Plus, they won 2-3 games they had no business winning. Unlike the previous two coaches, this one has a plan to win games, and the plan changes depending upon the opponent. You can see the strategy in the play, he just doesn't have the horses to pull it off.

Sure, I asked Krystkowiak about his unusual prep for the Ducks. He said the Utes were tired, and no one felt much like practicing, and so they “went and took it out on a few pins.”
